Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University baseball team split a pair of games against Saint Augustine's University on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks move to 12-18 on the year and 6-4 in CIAA play while the Falcons post a 9-25 record and 4-3 mark in the league. Chowan fell to Saint Augustine's 17-6 in game one before earning a 12-2 victory in the nightcap.
William Thomas put the Falcons on the board in their first at-bat with a grand slam over the right field fence in the top of the first. Saint Augustine's plated three runs in the second using Carey Cheek's RBI single, a stolen base, and Darrell Langston's RBI to pull away 7-0. The Hawks answered back in the bottom of the second, scoring one run on a triple to right by
Will Gurganus. Two bases loaded walks and a sacrifice fly by Cheek led to three additional runs for the Falcons in the third, leaving the Hawks trailing 10-1.
In the fifth, Saint Augustine's took advantage of a bases loaded walk, infield fly, and wild pitch to score three runs. A pair of two-run doubles by Corey Brassington and Johnathon Sierra pushed the Falcons ahead 17-1 in the sixth. A Falcon error, and RBI singles by
Connor Arcobasso and
Wade Wyatt Jr. handed the Hawks three runs in the bottom of the frame. Chowan plated two additional runs in the bottom of the seventh using an RBI single by Arcobasso and sacrifice fly by
Aaron Flanagan, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit as the Hawks took the 17-6 setback.
Bobby Mason took the loss on the mound after surrendering seven runs (six earned) off of four hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Troy Bettinger,
Tre Harper,
Carter Siweck, and
Kolby Walker all entered the contest in-relief. Bettinger and Harper each surrendered three runs while Siweck allowed four runs (four unearned) in two innings of work.
Marquis Johnson picked up the win. He tossed 5.2 innings in the contest, surrendering four runs (two earned) off of nine hits while striking out seven batters. Corey Brassington entered the game in-relief. He held the Hawks to two runs (two earned) off of three hits over 1.1 innings.
Arcobasso,
Zach Cooper, Gurganus,
Marvin Harrell Jr., and Wyatt Jr. each recorded two hits in the setback. Langston tallied two hits in the win for the Falcons with Carter and Sierra each recording four RBIs. Brassington and Cheek each knocked in three RBIs for Saint Augustine's.
Game two featured a pitchers' duel between Chowan's
Cody Smith and Saint Augustine's Sean Bassington until the sixth inning. A wild pitch and single by Thomas gave the Falcons a 2-0 advantage in the top of the frame. The Hawks responded with 12 runs of their own in the bottom of the inning after 13 hits and two Saint Augustine errors. Flanagan got the offense rolling with an RBI single. A Falcon error and Cooper's RBI double gave Chowan the go-ahead. The Hawks pulled away 6-2 after a three-run homerun by
Josh Martin.
RBI singles by Gurganus and Arcobasso, along with Flanagan's fielder's choice, Cooper's two-run double, and Wyatt Jr.'s RBI single propelled the Hawks to the 12-2 win.
Cody Smith earned the win on the mound. He threw all seven innings in the contest and held the Falcons to three hits while striking out 11 batters.
Sean Bassington took the loss for Saint Augustine's. He surrendered six runs (five earned) off of 11 hits in five innings of work. Cheek and Corey Brassington both entered the game in-relief.
Cooper,
Emory Chopp, and Flanagan each tallied three hits for the Hawks in the win. Cooper and Martin both recorded three RBI for Chowan.
The Hawks and Falcons conclude the series on Monday at Hawkins Field. First pitch is slated for 2:30pm.
