Box Score CARY, NC- The Chowan University baseball team defeated Saint Augustine's University 12-2 on Friday evening to advance to the CIAA Championship Game. The Hawks will square off against Winston-Salem State University on Saturday at 11am at USA Baseball National Training Complex. Admission is $5.
A Falcon error, RBI double by
Zach Cooper and RBI single by
Wade Wyatt Jr. gave Chowan an early 3-0 lead in the first.
Jack Downum homered in the second and a passed ball in the third led to an additional run for the Hawks. Saint Augustine's answered back with one in the fifth behind Tyquan Bryant's RBI double.
The Hawks tacked on two runs in the sixth using
Marvin Harrell Jr.'s RBI single and
Emory Chopp's sacrifice fly to take a 7-1 lead. Wyatt Jr.'s base hit up the middle extended Chowan's advantage to 8-1 and Harrell Jr. pushed the Hawks ahead 10-1 in the sixth with a two-run double. A triple by
Aaron Flanagan along with Cooper's RBI single left the Falcons trailing 12-1 in the seventh.
The Falcons mustered one run in the eighth but it proved to be too little too late as the Hawks rolled to the 12-2 victory.
Wyatt Jr. paced the Hawks with four hits and two RBI. Cooper notched two hits and two RBI while Harvell Jr. notched two hits and three RBI in the victory. Darrell Langston and Mikal Batts each recorded two hits for Saint Augustine's.
Bobby Mason picked up the win on the mound, his third of the season, for the Chowan Blue and White. He held the Falcons to five hits in five innings of work while striking out three batters.
Carter Siweck entered the contest in-relief. He tossed four innings and held Saint Augustine's to three hits.
TImothy Carter took the loss on the mound for Saint Augustine's. He allowed nine runs (six earned) off of nine hits in 5.2 innings of work.
The Hawks, advancing to the CIAA Championship out of the losers' bracket, will need to defeat Winston-Salem State twice on Saturday to secure the title.
