Box Score CARY, NC – The Chowan University baseball team opened the 2016 CIAA Baseball Championship with a 10-1 loss to Saint Augustine's University but bounced back to beat Virginia State University 14-3. The Hawks move to 23-23 on the year after first day play at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, North Carolina.
The #2 seeded Chowan Hawks were out hit 14-4 against the #3 seeded Saint Augustines University.
Scott Edge (4-4) picked up the loss on the mound after throwing four innings. He gave up seven hits, five runs (three earned), and struck out two batters in the game.

For Saint Augustines, Hector Pichardo pitched a complete game. He got support from his offense with 14 hits. Pichardo held the Hawks scoring off until the bottom of the 5
th inning when
Will Gurganus scored on a sacrifice fly by Wade Wyatt.
The loss moved Chowan to the consolation bracket where they faced off against the #4 seeded Virginia State Trojans.
Cody Smith got the nod on the mound in game two where he picked up his team-high 8
th win of the season. Smith pitched six innings in the win, mowing down nine Trojan batters and giving up just one hit in the game.

Matt Kaplan, and
Carter Siweck each pitched one inning in relief of Smith.
The Hawks pounded out 20 hits as a team with
Zach Cooper leading the way with four hits in five plate appearances.
Emory Chopp ended the game 3-5 with an RBI while Marvin Harrell went 3-6 with two RBI and a run scored.
The Hawks will play the loser of the Winston-Salem State University and Saint Augustines University (Friday, 12:00pm) at 3:00pm at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, North Carolina.
