ROCKY MOUNT, NC- The Chowan University men's tennis team clinched their third consecutive CIAA Regular Season title on Sunday afternoon with a 7-2 win over Shaw University. The Hawks improve to 17-6 overall and conclude CIAA play with an undefeated 8-0 record while the Bears move to 9-5 overall and 6-2 in league play with the setback.
In doubles play,
Rafael Goncalves and
Louis Proulx picked up an 8-3 win in the number three spot before
Mariano Yeh and
Mateusz Izycki fell to their opponents 8-5 in number two doubles.
Farid Hajizada and
Adi Kaliakperov teamed up for an 8-6 doubles win in the number one position to give the Hawks an early 2-1 lead.
In singles competition, Hajizada opened play with a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the number one position. Kaliakperov and Izycki each earned wins in the number four and two singles position before Goncalves outlasted Bach Tran 4-6, 6-3, (12-10) in the number three spot. Proulx earned a 1-6, 6-0, 6-3 win in the number six spot. Kaliakperov dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision in the number four position, but the Hawks secured the 7-2 win, clinching the regular season title.
Chowan concludes regular season play on Monday as the Hawks play host to Virginia Wesleyan. First serve is slated for 4pm.
