Flanagan's Walk-off Homer Lifts Hawks over Falcons

Aaron Flanagan hit a two-run walk-off homerun on Saturday.
Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University baseball team used a two-run homerun by Aaron Flanagan in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull off a 9-8 win over Saint Augustine's University on Saturday in CIAA play.  The Hawks improve to 11-17 overall and 5-3 in league play with the win while the Falcons slide to 8-24 on the season with the loss and 3-2 against CIAA competition. 

Chowan grabbed a quick 2-0 lead using a fielder's choice by Wade Wyatt Jr. and RBI single by Josh Martin in the bottom of the first.  A triple by Marvin Harrell Jr., double steal, and RBI singles by Wyatt Jr. and Martin led to a four-run second inning, handing the Hawks a 6-0 advantage after two innings of play.   

The Falcons rallied for four runs in the fourth behind Ricardo Martin's two-run single and Timothy Carter's two-run blast.  Darrell Langston's sacrifice fly and Martin's RBI single up the middle knotted the score 6-6 in the top of the fifth. 

Saint Augustine's grabbed a 7-6 lead after Mikal Batt's sacrifice fly in the sixth but Chowan answered back in their half of the frame, scoring one run on a Falcon error. Martin's RBI single in the top of the seventh pushed the Falcons ahead 8-7.  Down but not out, Connor Arcobasso led off the bottom of the seventh with a single up the middle to set the stage for Flanagan.  Flanagan answered the call with a two-run homerun over the right field fence, securing the 9-8 win for Chowan. 

The Hawks pounded out 14 hits over the course of the afternoon with the Falcons tallying 11 hits in the contest.  Arcobasso led the effort for Chowan with three hits while Jack Downum, Will Gurganus, Harrell Jr., and Martin each tallied two hits in the victory.  Flanagan, Martin, and Wyatt Jr. each recorded two RBIs in the win.

Martin paced the Falcons offensively with three hits and four RBIs in the loss.  Carey Cheek, Darrell Langston, and William Thomas all notched two hits in the contest. 

Cheek took the loss on the mound.  He entered the contest in-relief, surrendering three hits and two runs (two earned).  Hector Pichardo threw two innings for Saint Augustine's; surrendering six runs (six earned) off of seven hits.   Thomas held the Hawks to one run (unearned)  in 3.1 innings of work. 

Scott Edge started the game on the mound for Chowan.  He gave-up six runs (six earned) off of nine hits while striking out three batters over the course of 4.2 innings.  Tre Harper threw 1.1 innings in relief, surrendering one unearned run.  Austin McGhee was credited with the win.  He entered the contest in the seventh inning and allowed one run (earned) off of two hits.

Chowan and Saint Augustine's return to Hawkins Field on Sunday for a doubleheader match-up.  First pitch for the CIAA series is scheduled for 1:00pm.  The Hawks and Falcons will conclude the four-game series on Monday.  First pitch is slated for 2:30pm.
