Box Score MOUNT OLIVE, NC- The Chowan University baseball team earned an 8-4 win over the University of Mount Olive on Tuesday evening. The Hawks improve to 22-21 on the season with the win while the Trojans move to 23-17 on the year with the setback.
The Hawks struck first in the contest using
Zach Cooper's sacrifice fly to take an early 1-0 lead. Mount Olive responded with two runs in the first behind Brett Lang's sacrifice fly and Stephen Wallace's RBI single. A Chowan error led to an additional run for Mount Olive in the second before
Connor Arcobasso's RBI single made the score 3-2. Zak Orrison's RBI triple in the fourth handed the Trojans a 4-2 advantage.
Down but not out, the Hawks rallied to score two runs in the seventh off of Cooper's double and
Josh Martin's single to knot the score 4-4.
Wade Wyatt Jr.'s RBI single, a bases-loaded walk, and
Will Gurganus' two-run single in the ninth gave the Hawks all they would need to secure the 8-4 win.
Cooper paced the Hawks with three hits and two RBI in the win. Gurganus and Martin each tallied two hits for the Chowan Blue and White with Gurganus accounting for two RBI. Mount Olive recorded six hits in the setback by six different batters.
Cody Smith pitched six innings in the contest and held the Trojans to five hits and four runs (three earned).
Austin McGhee entered the game in-relief; throwing three shutout innings en-route to earning the win on the mound.
Chowan and Mount Olive square off again on Wednesday in a nine-inning contest. First pitch is slated for 4pm.
