Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO , NC – The Chowan University baseball team split a doubleheader with Bluefield State University on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks took three out of four games in the non-conference series. The Hawks blasted the Blues in game one 18-2 but dropped the nightcap 9-4. The Hawks pounded out 24 hits in game one and 10 hits in game two. Chowan moves to 21-21 on the year after the Sunday split. Bluefield State University moves to 10-27 overall.
The Hawks got a solid first game outing from
Matt Kaplan. He picked up the win on the mound after throwing five innings, giving up three hits, and two runs.
Carter Siweck pitched two hitless innings to end the game. He struck out three Blues batters in two innings of work.
CU's
Aaron Flanagan was perfect at the plate in the first game win. He went 5-5 with two runs batted in and three runs scored.
Zach Cooper finished up game one 4-5 with three RBI and three runs scored.
Will Gurganus,
Connor Arcobasso, and
Emory Chopp each added three hits in the game one win. Marvin Harrell picked up his 18
th steal of the season and knocked in three runs on two hits.
For Bluefield State, Cole Blocker picked up the loss on the mound. He tossed 2.2 innings in the game, giving up 10 hits and five earned runs. Kaplan held the Blues to three hits in the game. Cody Underwood, Sean Williams, and Justin Bowler each tallied a hit in the game. Williams drove in both runs for the Blues.
Will Edwards got the nod for the Hawks in the nightcap. After a four-run first at-bat for the Blues, Edwards was relieved by
Tre Harper in the top of the second. Harper tossed five innings in relief, giving up four hits and three runs but striking out six batters.
Austin McGhee pitched the final inning for the Hawks. Edwards picked up the loss on the mound for Chowan.
The Blues score seven runs in their first two at-bats to jump out to an early 7-0 lead. They added another single run in the fourth before the Hawks could answer in the bottom of the 6
th. The Hawks battled in their final at-bat, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh but their comeback fell short. Bluefield State held on for the 9-4 win.
Gurganus and Wade Wyatt collected two hits each in the second game.
The Hawks will wrap up the 2016 regular season on Tuesday and Wednesday with a two-game road series with the University of Mount Olive.
