CU Baseball Handles Trojans for CIAA Win

CU's Connor Arcobasso went 3-4 in Wednesday's win over VSU.
Box Score MURFREESBORO - The Chowan University baseball team moved to 18-20 on the year after beating Virginia State University 9-3 in a CIAA single game on Wednesday afternoon. Wednesday's  game completed the Hawks and Trojans four-game series after rain forced the two teams to postpone game two of the series due to inclement weather earlier in the year.  The Hawks improve to 12-4 in CIAA play after Wednesday's win. Virginia State falls to 4-27 on the year and 3-8 in CIAA play.

Cody Smith got the nod on the mound for the Hawks where he picked up his team-leading seventh win of the season. Smith pitched his third complete game for the Hawks, striking out eight Trojan batters. He gave up four hits and three unearned runs in the contest.

The Trojans got on the board first in the top of the first inning when O'Neal Shell scored on a single to right field by David Markins. They took at 1-0 lead into the bottom half of the inning and held it until the bottom of the third.

CU's Marvin Harrell laid down a squeeze bunt to score Emory Chopp from third to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning. Chopp led the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a right field single by Jack Downum.  Downum scored two batters later on a single by Connor Arcobasso to take a 2-1 lead. With two outs, Aaron Flanagan homered to left field to give the Hawks a 4-1 lead.

The Hawks added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Wade Wyatt and Josh Martin led the inning off with back to back doubles. Will Gurganus picked up an RBI single to give the Hawks a 7-1 cushion after four innings.

After a scoreless fifth inning, the Hawks used a Trojan error in the bottom of the sixth to plate to runs and get a 9-1 lead. Virginia State picked up a pair of runs in their final at-bat to cut the lead to 9-3 but it wasn't enough to overcome the Hawks who went on to win 9-3.

Chowan pounded out 10 team hits led by Connor Arcobasso who went 3-4 with a double and three runs batted in. Aaron Flanagan went 1-4 with a homerun and two runs batted in. Will Gurganus ended the day 2-4 with a run and an RBI.

For VSU, Jacob Wells got the loss on the mound after throwing three innings. He gave up four earned runs off of three hits. Jordan Claytor threw the final three innings for the Trojans. David Markins paced Virginia State offensively with a 2-4 outing at the plate.

Chowan will host Bluefield State University in a four-game series April 19th-20th at Hawkins Field.
