HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC - The Chowan University men's tennis team, regionally ranked #9, was victorious over #5 University of Charleston (WV) with a 6-3 win on Wednesday afternoon.  The Hawks improve to 7-4 with the victory while the Golden Eagles slip to 3-4 with the loss.
 
In doubles, the number three duo of Rafael Goncalves and Louis Proulx completed their match first, downing Charleston's Jacob Lorenz and Varun Shah 8-5. Next, Mateusz Izycki and Mariano Yeh topped their opponents 8-6 in the number two spot to give Chowan a 2-0 lead. Farid Hajizada and Adi Kaliakperov fell to Alec Foote and James Gannell 9-8 (2) in the number one position, putting Chowan at 2-1 heading into singles.
 
At the number five singles spot, Yeh defeated his opponent 6-2, 6-1, while Kaliakperov had a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Jamie Gibson at number four singles. With a 4-1 lead for the Hawks, Izycki then defeated his opponent 6-4, 7-5 at the number two singles position, clinching the win for the Hawks. At number three singles, Goncalves dropped the first set 3-6 before coming back and winning the next two sets 6-1, 6-4 for the victory. Hajizada lost a hard fought three set match at number one singles with a score of 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, while Proulx fell to Shah in the closest match of the day, 6-7(4), 7-6(0), 11-9.
 
The Hawks return to action on Friday when they compete against Northwood University.
