HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC- The Chowan University men's tennis team, regionally ranked #9, handed #4 Edinboro University their first loss of the season when they won a tough 6-3 decision on Monday afternoon. The Hawks improve to 6-4 with the victory while the Fighting Scots slip to 8-1 with the loss.
In doubles,
Farid Hajizada and
Adi Kaliakperov fell to their opponents 8-6 in the number one position, while
Mateusz Izycki and
Mariano Yeh fought hard to win their match at number two with a score of 9-7. Chowan's number three duo of
Rafael Goncalves and
Louis Proulx also picked up a tough 9-7 win over their opponents.
With a 2-1 lead heading into singles, Izycki picked up a victory at number two singles, taking the first set 7-6 (4) before breezing through the second set 6-1. Goncalves dropped a match with a score of 7-5, 6-4 at number three singles, while Hajizada picked up a 6-3, 7-6(5) win at number one singles to give the Hawks a 4-2 lead. Kaliakperov clinched the win for Chowan with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at number four singles.
At the number five singles spot,
Mariano Yeh fell to his opponent 6-2, 6-1, while Proulx earned the final point for the Hawks after losing the first set 1-6 and coming back for a 6-1 second set win and 10-8 super tiebreaker score.
Chowan returns to the court on Wednesday when they take on the University of Charleston (WV).
