MURFREESBORO, N.C. – Throughout the 2026-27 Chowan Athletics season, the Chowan Athletic Department will feature the Ace Hardware Student-Athletes of the Week. For the week of October 29 – November 5,
Madison Henderson from the women's volleyball team and
David De Simon from the men's tennis team have been recognized for their standout performances.
Madison Henderson of the Chowan women's volleyball team delivered a strong two-match performance to close out the regular season, leading the Hawks offensively against Ferrum College and Barton College. Henderson recorded 12 kills in each contest, finishing the week with 24 kills across 10 sets. In the Hawks' Senior Day matchup against Ferrum on October 31, Henderson added two solo blocks and one block assist while contributing 14.5 points. She followed that performance with another 12-kill outing against Barton on November 3, making an impact defensively with five solo blocks and one block assist to finish with 17.5 points. Henderson's five solo blocks against the Bulldogs highlighted her presence at the net, as she consistently challenged the opposition's attack while providing a strong offensive presence for the Hawks. Across the two matches, Henderson totaled 24 kills, seven solo blocks, and two block assists, showcasing her versatility and contributions on both sides of the net.
David De Simon of the Chowan men's tennis team captured the Flight B singles championship at the Barton invite after putting together a strong run at the individual tournament on October 30-31. Competing in one of the tournament's higher and more competitive flights, De Simon opened the tournament with a hard-fought quarterfinal victory over Freddie Sharp of Lenoir-Rhyne College. After dropping the opening set 7-6 (5), De Simon responded by taking the second set 6-3 before securing the match with a 10-5 victory in the deciding super tiebreak. He carried that momentum into the semifinals, defeating Stanley Long of Lees-McRae College in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, to advance to the championship match. Facing top-seeded Hans Engelbrecht, also of Lees-McRae, De Simon once again showed his resilience after dropping the opening set 6-4. He bounced back with a 6-1 second-set victory before clinching the Flight B championship with an 11-9 win in the deciding tiebreak. De Simon's Flight B title marked an impressive finish to the Hawks fall schedule.
