Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University baseball team picked up two victories on Saturday afternoon against Salem International University. The Hawks rallied for a 5-4 win in the opening contest before edging the Tigers 3-0 in the nightcap. Chowan improves to 5-10 on the season with the wins while the Tigers slide to 2-11 on the year.
Salem International struck first in the opening contest after Matthew Flores hit an RBI double down the left field line. The Tigers plated an additional run in the top of the fourth when Cody Crawford's groundout allowed Rahul Badve to score.
The Hawks answered back with two runs of their own in their half of the frame with RBI singles by
Zach Cooper and
Marvin Harrell Jr. Badve's RBI infield single in the fifth and Santino Alteri's RBI base hit knock in the sixth pushed the Tigers ahead 4-2. In the bottom the sixth,
Connor Arcobasso's three-run blast to left gave the Hawks all they would need to secure the 5-4 victory.
Arcobasso paced the Hawks with three hits with Cooper adding two hits in the win. Alteri, Badve, and Sean Deviney each tallied two hits for Salem International in the setback.
Bobby Mason tossed five innings for the Hawks, surrendering three runs (three earned) while striking out five.
Austin McGhee entered the contest in-relief and picked up the victory. He held the Tigers to one rune (one earned) in two innings of work.
Kevin Ortiz was credited with the loss for Salem International. He surrendered three runs in the sixth. Talon Kunkel started the game for the Tigers and gave-up two runs (two earned) over the course of five innings.
In the second game of the day,
Will Gurganus put the Hawks on the board in the bottom of the third with an infield single. Holding a 1-0 advantage,
Aaron Akers' groundout allowed Cooper to score, pushing Chowan ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth.
Gurganus' RBI double to right sent Chowan ahead 3-0 in the fifth. The Tigers were unable to respond offensively, handing the Hawks the 3-0 victory in the nightcap.
Gurganus tallied three hits in the contest while Arcobasso, Cooper,
Wade Wyatt Jr. , and
Tanner Woods each added one hit apiece. Donato Gallano and Nate Mastervick tallied the lone hits for the Tigers in game two.
Cody Smith earned the shutout win on the mound, holding Salem International to two hits while striking out eight batters.
Carter Siweck earned the save for the Chowan Blue and White.
Colton Lankford took the loss on the mound for the Tigers. He surrendered seven hits and three runs (three earned) while striking out seven over the course of six innings.
Salem International and Chowan take the field again on Sunday in a nine-inning contest. First pitch is slated for 12:00pm.
