RALEIGH, NC – Chowan men's tennis suffered a loss to West Virginia Wesleyan College in regional play on Friday afternoon. The Hawks picked up three singles wins, but fell 6-3 in the match up. Chowan drops to 3-4 on the year after Friday's loss, while West Virginia Wesleyan advances to a 6-1 record with the win.
In doubles, CU's
Farid Hajizada and
Adi Kaliakperov lost an 8-5 decision to Nathan Sabate and Ferran Berga in the number one doubles position. At number two,
Mateusz Izycki and
Mariano Yeh fell to their opponents, Ramon Rodriguez and Pedro Nassar, 8-4, while
Rafael Goncalves and
Louis Proulx also suffered an 8-4 loss in the number three position, losing to West Virginia Wesleyan's Jacob Rendon and Andre Fernandes.
In singles play, Chowan's Hajizada had little trouble downing Sabate 6-3, 6-3 at the number one position, while Izycki hung on to defeat Rendon 5-7, 7-5 (11-9) at the number two singles spot. Goncalves dropped the number three singles match to Rodriguez 6-2, 6-4 while Kaliakperov lost a tough three set match to Berga 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 in the number four spot.
At the number five singles position, Yeh dropped the first set against WVWC's Nassar 4-6, but came back to take the second set 7-6 (3). He then edged Nassar in a third set super tiebreaker 10-7 to take the match. Rounding out the scoring for Chowan, Proulx dropped the number six singles match 6-2, 7-5 to Timothy Stephens.
The Hawks return to action on March 5th when they travel to Winston-Salem, North Carolina to play Johnson C. Smith College in a doubleheader at 9:00am and 1:00pm in the first CIAA Round Up of the season.
