Braves Finish off Hawks

Josh Martin tallied three hits for the Hawks on Wednesday.
Box Score PEMBROKE, NC - The Chowan University baseball team dropped an 11-5 decision to UNC Pembroke on Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks fall to 10-17 on the season with the setback while the Braves improve to 20-8 on the year with the victory.

The Hawks struck first in the contest after taking advantage of a UNC Pembroke error to take an early 1-0 lead. Chowan held onto the advantage until the bottom of the third when Alex Minton's two-run homerun followed by Stibel Aleman Saba's RBI groundout gave the Braves a 3-1 advantage. Another UNC Pembroke error in the fourth led to an additional run for the Hawks before Hayden Buffkin's solo shot pushed the Braves ahead 4-2 in the bottom of the frame.

Nick Debo hit a two-run homerun in the fifth to leave the Hawks trailing 6-2. The Hawks took advantage of a bases-loaded walk and a two-run single by Will Gurganus in the sixth to pull within striking distance (6-5). A wild pitch in the bottom of the frame gave the Braves a 7-5 advantage. UNC Pembroke pulled away in the bottom of the seventh using a wild pitch and three-run homerun by Nolan Pierce. Chowan was unable to overcome the deficit and suffered the 11-5 setback.

Will Edwards took the loss on the mound for the Hawks. He surrendered seven runs (seven earned) off of eight hits while striking out four in 5.2 innings of work. Tre Harper, Troy Bettinger, and Bailey Lipscomb all entered the contest in-relief. Josh Martin paced the Hawks with three hits in the loss with Connor Arcobasso, Zach Cooper, and Marvin Harrell Jr. each notching two hits in the contest.

Justin Pegram picked up the win for UNC Pembroke. He surrendered two unearned runs off of five hits in four innings of work. Hank Simpson, Kyle Ramsey, Alex Britt, and Daniel Batts all pitched in-relief. Buffkin, Pierce, and Nick Salisbury each tallied two hits in the win with Pierce knocking the three runs.

The Hawks return to action April 2nd and 3rd to take on Saint Augustine's University in CIAA action. First pitch is slated for 1:00pm on both days at Hawkins Field.
