Box Score PEMBROKE, NC- The Chowan University baseball team suffered a 20-5 setback to UNC Pembroke on Tuesday evening. The Hawks fall to 10-16 on the season with the loss while the Braves improve to 19-8 on the year with the victory.
The Hawks struck first in the contest using
Aaron Flanagan's RBI single in the top of the first. UNC Pembroke plated three runs in their half of the frame behind Drew Beaver's three-run homerun and extended their lead to 6-1 after Nick Salisbury's solo homerun, Stibel Aleman Saba's RBI single and Christian Snider's RBI single in the second.
Zach Cooper's single to right allowed
Will Gurganus to score in the top of the third but a Hawk error, triple by Nick Debo and stolen base led to three additional runs for the Braves in the third.
The Hawks regrouped in the top of the fourth, using Connor Acrobasso's three-run homer in the fourth to make the score 9-5. UNC Pembroke tacked on one run in the bottom of the frame using a homerun by Nolan Pierce. Five hits and a Chowan error led to four runs for UNC Pembroke in the bottom of the fifth, leaving Chowan looking to claw back from a 14-5 deficit.
Snider's two run homerun, Justin Dattilo's solo shot, RBI singles by Nick Hayes and Luke Jackson, along with a wild pitch gave the Braves a commanding 20-5 advantage in the seventh. Both teams failed to score in the remainder of the contest, resulting in the 20-5 loss for Chowan.
Arcobasso led the Hawks' effort offensive with two hits and three RBI.
Wade Wyatt Jr. added two hits in the setback while
Emory Chopp, Cooper, Flanagan, and Gurganus each notched one hit in the contest.
UNC Pembroke tallied 24 hits in the win led by Hayden Buffkin with four hits. Aleman Saba and Debo each added three hits in the win with Beaver accounting for four RBI.
Matt Kaplan took the loss on the mound for Chowan. He surrendered 10 runs (nine earned) off of 12 hits in four innings of work while striking three batters.
Kolby Walker,
Carter Siweck, and
Jack Downum each entered the game in-relief.
Matt Fuhr earned the win for the Braves. He held the Hawks to five hits and two runs (one earned) while tallying six strikeouts over the course of three innings. Trace Hagler, Chance Pauley, Chris Stewart, and Tyler Holt all tossed innings in-relief.
The Hawks take on UNC Pembroke again on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 3:00pm.
