Hawks Topple Trojans

Zach Cooper tallied three hits five RBI for the Hawks on Sunday.
Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University baseball team defeated Virginia State University 14-0 on Sunday afternoon play. The Hawks improve to 10-15 on the season and 3-2 in CIAA play with the win while the Trojans move to 2-18 overall and 1-2 in the league with the setback. The final game of the CIAA series was postponed due to inclement weather and poor field conditions.

In the bottom of the first, Connor Arcobasso's single through the right side gave the Hawks an early 1-0 lead in the first game. Marvin Harrell Jr.'s RBI single to left, Tanner Woods' two-run double and a two-run double by Zach Cooper gave Chowan five additional runs in the second, leaving the Trojans trailing 6-0. Wade Wyatt Jr. scored for the Hawks in the third after a wild pitch by Virginia State's Jordan Claytor, pushing Chowan ahead 7-0.

Aaron Flanagan drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth to lift the Hawks ahead 8-0. Woods' RBI single in the fifth followed by Cooper's three-run double gave Chowan a commanding 12-0 advantage. The Hawks tacked on two additional runs in the same frame behind Flanagan's two-run homerun to pull away 14-0 before the game was called due to inclement weather and poor field conditions.

Bobby Mason picked up the win on the mound for the Hawks. He tossed five innings in the shut-out win while holding the Trojans to five hits and striking out six batters. Cooper had three hits and five RBIs while Harrell added three hits and one RBI. Woods and Wyatt notched two hits apiece with Woods driving in three runs. Flanagan also recorded three RBIs in the victory.

Claytor took the loss for Virginia State after surrendering eight runs (eight earned) off of nine hits in three innings of work. Johnny Rowe entered the game in-relief and gave up six runs (six earned) off of five hits over the course of 1.2 innings. David Markins tallied two hits for Virginia State with Antonio Alaffita, Stephen Brown, and Bradley Taylor II, each notching hits in the setback.
