Hawks Take Down Shaw on Saturday, Coach Stambaugh Earns 500th Collegiate Career Win

Coach Stambaugh earned his 500th career win on Saturday.
MURFREESBORO, NC – The Chowan University men's tennis team picked up their fourth straight CIAA victory on Saturday morning with a 5-4 win over Shaw University.  The victory against the Bears was also Coach Chris Stambaugh's 500th overall collegiate career victory.  With the win, the Hawks improve to 11-6 on the season and 4-0 in league play.  Shaw slides to 5-2 on the season and 3-1 against CIAA competition after the loss.

In doubles play, the Hawks won two of the three doubles matches.  At the number one and two positions, the duos of Farid Hajizada/Adi Kaliakperov and Mateusz Izycki/Mariano Yeh took down their opponents both by a score of 8-4, Izycki and Yeh increasing their doubles win streak to ten with today's victory. At the number three doubles spot, Rafael Goncalves and Louis Proulx fell to Guido Margiotta and Marico Gonzalez 8-2.

With the 2-1 lead heading into singles play, the Hawks were able to secure three of the six singles matches for the 5-4 win.  Hajizada made quick work of Daniel Ac at the number one singles position, defeating him by a score of 6-0, 6-0 and bringing Chowan's lead to 3-1. At the number four singles spot, Kaliakperov extended his singles win streak to ten when he handed Diego Choque a 6-4, 6-1 loss, while Izycki secured the win for the Hawks with his 6-3, 6-2 victory of Javier Saieg.

Goncalves, Yeh and Proulx each fought hard, but fell to their opponents in a third set super tiebreaker in the number three, five and six singles spots, respectively, bringing the final score to 5-4.

Stambaugh's 500th win as a head college tennis coach is the sum of 241 wins as a women's coach and 259 as a men's coach.  His first win was on March 8, 1997 when his men's team at Shepherd University (W. Va.) defeated Concord University by a score of 5-4.  At Chowan since 2009, Stambaugh has accumulated 113 wins with the women and 78 with the men.

The second match of today's doubleheader with Shaw was cancelled due to rain and has been rescheduled for April 22nd in Rocky Mount.

Chowan will return to action on March 22nd when they travel to Richmond, Virginia to take on conference foe Virginia Union University at 1:00pm.
