Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University baseball team split a pair of games against Virginia State University on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks suffered a 6-0 setback in the first game before recovering to top the Trojans 7-5 in the nightcap. Chowan improves to 9-15 on the season and 3-3 in CIAA after Saturday's games. Virginia State moves to 2-17 on the year and 1-1 in the league.
In the opening game, Virginia State scored two runs in the top of the second using two Chowan errors. A sacrifice fly by David Markins, single by Aaron Harris, and groundout out by Jamison Griffin led to three more runs for the Trojans in the third. Griffin's RBI single in the fifth pushed Virginia State ahead 6-0.
The Hawks were unable to recover from the deficit, suffering the 6-0 setback on their home field.
Scott Edge took the loss on the mound for Chowan. He surrendered six runs (two earned) off of eight hits in six innings of work.
Tre Harper entered the contest in-relief and threw the final inning of the contest.
Jacob Wells picked up the shut out win for on the mound for Virginia State. He held the Hawks to five hits in seven innings of work.

Wade Wyatt Jr. each recorded hits for Chowan in the loss. Aaron Harris and Griffin each tallied two hits for the Trojans with Griffin accounting for two RBI.
In the second game of the day, Wyatt hit a two-run double and Woods laced an RBI double in the bottom of the second to give the Hawks an early 3-0 edge. Julian White's RBI single and Markins' two-run double in the Trojans' next at-bat knotted the score 3-3 but
Blake Eure's single to left center in the bottom of the frame gave the Hawks a 4-3 edge.
A two-run triple by
Connor Arcobasso followed by a Virginia State error gave the Hawks a 7-3 cushion in the bottom of the sixth.
With
Austin McGhee on the mound in the top of the seventh, White's RBI double and Harris' RBI single for Virginia State made the score 7-5. McGhee worked out of a bases-loaded jam, ending the inning with a strikeout to secure victory for the Hawks.
Cody Smith picked up the win on the mound for Chowan. He held Virginia State to five hits and three runs (three earned) in six innings of work while striking out eight batters. Eure tallied three hits in the win with Wyatt Jr. adding two hits and two RBI.
Larry Stephens Jr. took the loss for Virginia State after surrendering seven runs (six earned) off of 11 hits in six innings of work. Harris and White each notched two hits with Markins and White accounting for two RBI apiece.
Chowan and Virginia State take the field again on Sunday in a CIAA doubleheader match-up. First pitch is slated for 1:00pm at Hawkins Field.
