ETTRICK, VA - The Chowan University men's tennis team defeated Virginia State University 9-0 in CIAA play on Thursday afternoon. The Hawks improve to 9-6 overall on the season and 3-0 in the CIAA with the victory. The Trojans slip to 5-1 overall and 5-1 in the conference with the loss.
Chowan rolled through Virginia State in both doubles and singles play. In doubles competition,
Farid Hajizada and
Adi Kaliakperov defeated Sultan Kenes and Jon Fuchs 8-2 in the number one spot, while
Mateusz Izycki and
Mariano Yeh handed Marcus Smith and Delwin McCurdy an 8-0 loss in the number two position. In number three doubles,
Rafael Goncalves and
Louis Proulx picked up an 8-2 win over Alex Walker and Keon Halley.
In singles play, Yeh earned the next win for the Hawks, by defeating Walker 6-0, 6-0 at the number five position and giving Chowan the 4-0 lead. In the sixth spot,
Enrique Barge clinched the win for the Hawks with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Halley, while in the fourth spot Kaliakperov picked up a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Fuchs. Izycki topped his opponent in the second position with a score of 6-3, 6-0, while Goncalves handed McCurdy a 6-2, 6-1 loss at the number three singles position. Hajizada earned the final win for the Hawks with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Kenes in the number one position.
The Hawks return to action on March 18th when they host Salem International University. Match time is set for 3:00pm.
