Box Score 2 ASHEBORO, NC- The Chowan University baseball team concluded a four-game CIAA series against Winston-Salem State University on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks fell to the Rams 6-0 in their first game on Saturday before edging Winston-Salem State 7-6 in the nightcap. Chowan moves to 8-14 on the season and begins CIAA play with a 2-2 record.
In the opening game, Brandon Fowler's RBI single gave the Rams a 1-0 lead in their first at-bat. Nate Steger's two-run double in the third pushed Winston-Salem State ahead 3-0. Fowler's RBI double and Steger's RBI single to right extended the Rams' lead to 5-0 in the fifth and Ivan Acuna's homerun in the sixth gave Winston-Salem State all they would need to earn the 6-0 win.
Devin McLemore earned the win on the mound for Winston-Salem State. He threw all seven innings in the contest while surrendering five hits and striking out ten batters.
Scott Edge took the loss for Chowan after giving up four runs (four earned) on five hits in 4.2 innings of work.
Will Edwards and
Tre Harper both entered the contest in-relief.
Will Gurganus and
Zach Cooper both tallied two hits in the first game while
Josh Martin added one hit in the setback. Acuna, Fowler, and Steger each recorded two hits for the Rams with Steger knocking in three RBI.
Winston-Salem State grabbed a quick 2-0 lead after the first two innings of play in game two. The Hawks plated four runs in the fourth using a homerun by
Tanner Woods, wild pitch by the Rams , RBI single by
Aaron Flanagan and a Winston-Salem State error. The Hawks surrendered a run in the fourth after an error but used a sacrifice fly by Cooper to pull away 5-3 in the fifth.
Steger's RBI single in the bottom of the frame made the score 5-4 before
Marvin Harrell Jr.'s RBI single in the sixth gave Chowan a 6-4 edge. Winston-Salem State responded with two runs off of an RBI groundout by Willie McCrae and single by Jason Baytop to knot the score 6-6.
In the top of the seventh, Flanagan's sacrifice fly allowed Gurganus to score, handing Chowan the 7-6 victory.
Matt Kaplan started the game on the mound for the Hawks. He threw four innings in the contest and gave up four runs (three earned) off of six hits. Jacob Moore entered the contest in-relief along with
Austin McGhee. McGhee picked up the win after holding Winston-Salem to one hit in 1.1 inning of work.
Martin had two hits for the Hawks in the nightcap with
Connor Arcobasso, Cooper, Gurganus, Flanagan, Harrell,
Wade Wyatt Jr., and Woods each notching one hit apiece.
Jordan Cummings took the loss on the mound for the Rams. Baytop, Fowler, Landon Steiner, and Rashad Webster each had two hits for Winston-Salem State in the setback.
The Hawks return to CIAA action March 19
th-20
th as Chowan plays host to Virginia State University. First pitch is slated for 1:00pm on Saturday and Sunday at Hawkins Field.
