Box Score 2 HARTSVILLE, SC- The Chowan University baseball team concluded their season-opening four-game series against Coker College on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks earned a 7-3 victory in the first game of the day but fell to the Cobras 7-3 in the nightcap.
Chowan moves to 1-3 on the season while Coker posts a 5-2 mark on the year after Sunday's games.
After two scoreless innings of play in the opening game,
Will Gurganus' RBI single put the Hawks on the board in the top of the third. A big fifth inning by Chowan put the game out of reach as
Connor Arcobasso, Gurganus,
Aaron Flanagan,
Zach Cooper,
Josh Martin, and
Wade Wyatt Jr. each accounted for RBIs with two outs in the frame to push the Hawks ahead 7-0.
The Cobras mustered three runs in the bottom of the sixth when Miguel Frias belted a three-run homerun. The rally proved to be too little too late as Chowan kept Coker off the board for the remainder of the contest.
Arcobasso, Gurganus, Martin, and
Tanner Woods each tallied two hits for the Hawks in the win.
Scott Edge picked up the victory on the mound after scattering five hits in six-inning of work.
Carter Siweck entered the contest in-relief of Edge.
Bryon Conner paced the Cobras with two hits in the setback. Ryan Milner took the loss on the mound. He threw 4.2 innings in the contest while surrendering six runs (all earned) off of eight hits.
In the nightcap, Coker jumped to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second using a combination of five walks, one Hawk error and two hits. The Cobras plated one additional run in each of the next two innings, resulting in a 7-0 advantage.
Chowan scored three runs in the top of the seventh using a fielder's choice by Woods, RBI double by Arcobasso and ground-out to third by Gurganus.
Flanagan and Cooper each had two hits in the setback for Chowan.
Cody Smith took the loss on the mound for the Hawks. He surrendered five runs (four earned) off of two hits in one inning of work.
Will Edwards, Billy Lipscomb, and Jacob Moore all entered the contest in-relief of Smith.
Dairius Coldiron earned the win on the mound for Coker after tossing five scoreless innings for the Cobras.
The Hawks return to action February 13
th-14
th for a three-game series against Post University. The contests mark the home-opening games of the season for Chowan. First pitch is slated for 12:00pm on Saturday and Sunday.
