Coker Takes Two over Hawks

Josh Martin had two hits for the Hawks on Saturday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HARTSVILLE, SC- The Chowan University baseball team dropped a pair of road games to Coker College on Saturday afternoon.  The contests were the Hawks' season-opening games.  Coker improves to 4-1 on the young season with the wins while Chowan starts the 2016 campaign with a 0-2 record.  The Cobras blanked the Hawks 6-0 in the first game of the day and picked up a 6-3 win over Chowan in game two.

In the opening game, the Cobras held the Hawks to four hits and took advantage of five Chowan  errors to earn the victory.  Coker struck twice in the second, fourth, and sixth innings, respectively en-route to the win.  The Cobras tallied nine hits over the course of the contest led by Clint Allen, Ryan Wayne and Will Winslow with two hits apiece.

Josh Martin tallied two hits for the Hawks in game one while Will Gurganus and Jack Downum each added one hit apiece for Chowan.   Bobby  Mason was credited with the loss in game one.  He threw 5.1 innings, surrendering nine hits and six runs (two earned).  Bailey Lipscomb entered the contest in relief.

Dallas Baldwin picked up the win on the mound for Coker.  He held the Hawks scoreless in 4.1 innings of work while striking out six batters.  Will Sutton threw the final 2.2 innings in-relief.  He tallied three strikeouts for the Cobras.

The Hawks got on the board first in the nightcap using an RBI single by Aaron Flanagan in the top of the first.  Coker answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 lead.

After three scoreless innings, a Hawk error allowed the Cobras to score one run in the fifth, resulting in a 3-1 advantage for Coker.  Two bases-loaded walks and a wild pitch allowed Coker to plate three additional runs in the sixth.

Chowan regrouped in the seventh; scoring two runs off three hits.  The rally proved to be too little too late as the Hawks were unable to overcome the deficit and suffered the 6-3 setback.

Tanner Woods tallied three hits in the loss with Flanagan adding two hits for the Hawks.  Connor Arcobasso, Flanagan, and Gurganus each had one RBI for the Chowan Blue and White in the setback.  The Haws out-hit the Cobras 10-4 in the nightcap.

Matt Kaplan took the loss on the mound in game two. He threw five innings in the contest, surrendering three runs (two earned) off of three hits.  Tre Harper threw one inning in-relief and gave-up three runs off of one hit.
