Hawks Split Sunday Play with Lock Haven

CU's Scott Edge picked up his second win on Sunday
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO, NC – The Chowan University baseball team split a doubleheader with Lock Haven University in Sunday afternoon non-conference play. The Hawks took game one of the doubleheader 8-7 but dropped the nightcap 16-3.  Chowan improves their overall record to 3-9 on the year after Sunday's split. Both teams came away with two wins in the four-game series. Lock Haven, playing in their season opening series, moves to 2-2 on the year after the weekend.

Senior hurler Scott Edge started on the mound for the Hawks, getting his second win of the season. Edge pitched 6.2 innings with five earned runs, four strikeouts, and six hits.

Edge retired the side to open the game and picked up two insurance runs from his teammates in their first at-bat. Aaron Flanagan singled through the left side to score Tanner Woods, who walked two at-bats earlier. Will Gurganus crossed the plate to get the second run of the inning on a Blake Eure infield single.

LHU's Ethan Moore tied the game in the top of the second inning with a two-run shot to left field. After an up and down inning for CU, the Bald Eagles took a 3-2 edge after Tyson Petershiem scored on a Justin Sleigh single to left field. Jason Belinda retired the Hawks with no threat in the third inning.

LHU loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fourth inning. CU's Edge pitched out of the jam. An error by LHU's defense scored to CU runners in the bottom of the 4th inning to take back the lead at 4-3. Hunter Szafarski knocked in Matt Lahn on a fielder's choice to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the fifth inning.

Flanagan blasted a triple to right field to open the bottom of the fifth inning. CU's Josh Martin singled to right center to score Flanagan to bust the tie at 5-4. With one out and the bases loaded, Marvin Harrell plated a run on an infield single to give the Hawks a 6-4 lead.

Edge retired the side, three up, three down to open play in the 6th inning. The Hawks had a two-out rally in the sixth inning, starting with a Blake Eure single back up the middle. Martin drove a ball to deep right field for a triple, scoring Eure from first base. Zach Cooper followed Martin's shot with a line drive to left field to score Martin for an 8-4 lead.

Edge started the top of the 7th inning, picking up the first two outs of the inning. The Bald Eagles started a two-out rally led by Sleigh who singled to left field. Matt Lahn singled behind Sleigh to put runners at first and second. Edge walked the bases loaded with two outs before being relieved by Carter Siweck. Szafarski doubled to left center, clearing the bases and cutting the Hawks lead to 8-7. Siweck settled in, and picked up a big strike out to close the game.

Edge picked up his second win on the mound while Siweck was credited with a save. Martin ended the game 2-4 at the plate with two runs batted in. Flanagan, Eure, and Cooper each tallied two hits in the win.

Jason Belinda picked up the loss on the mound for LHU. He tossed 4.1 innings, giving up six runs on five hits. He struck out seven Hawks' batters.
Offensively for LHU Szafarski was 2-4 with four RBI and Lahn and Sleigh each had two hits in the game.

Bailey Lipscomb got the nod for the Hawks in game two of the day. Lipscomb pitched 3.2 innings before being relieved by Troy Bettinger.

LHU got the scoring started in their second at-bat with a three run, four hit inning. Zach Manuppelli went to work on the mound for the Bald Eagles, keeping the Hawks off the board through six innings. Sleigh added to the LHU lead with a two-run homerun in the fourth inning to spread the 5-0. Szafarski highlighted a three-run 4th inning for LHU with an RBI double.

Tre Harper relieved Bettinger in the 6th inning. Bettinger pitched 1.1 innings, giving up a hit and a run. Tre Harper came into pitch in the sixth, giving up seven runs on seven hits. Kolby Walker pitched out the sixth inning. Zach Cooper came in to pitch the final inning for the Hawks.

The Bald Eagles exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning to extend their lead to 16-0. Manupelli started the seventh inning but was replaced by Brian Fisher, who closed out the game.

CU's Tanner Woods got the Hawks on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning with a three-run homerun to right field.
The Hawks were held to five hits in the game. Woods score a run and tallied three RBI.

Lipscomb picked up the loss in the game while counterpart Manupelli recorded the win. He tossed 6.2 innings, giving up three runs and striking out nine batters.

Szafarski was 3-4 with three RBI and three runs scored for LHU.

Chowan will travel to Francis Marion on March 1st in their next outing. They will return home to host Salem International University on March 6th and 7th. First pitch is slated for 12:00pm on both days at Hawkins Field.
