East Stroudsburg Sweeps Hawks in Four-Game Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO, NC – The Chowan University baseball team dropped a doubleheader to East Stroudsburg University on Sunday afternoon, moving them to 1-7 on the year. The Hawks lost game one of the doubleheader 7-4 and the nightcap 10-5. ESU improves to 4-0 after the four-game series. 

Scott Edge got the start on the mound to open Sunday's doubleheader.  Edge pitched out of the first inning and got some help from his offense in the bottom of the first inning.  Woods led the at-bat off with a walk. Connor Arcobasso singled to left center field moving Woods to third base. Aaron Flanagan drove in Woods on an infield out for a 1-0 first inning lead.

ESU scored two runs in in the top of the 2nd after a pair of doubles by Connor Crookman and Casey Siverio. They added another run in their next at-bat when Ian Allen scored on a Drew Hercik sacrifice fly. ESU's Tyler Eckman shut down the Hawks offense through his exit in the sixth inning. ESU added four runs over the 6th and 7th innings before the Hawks answered in their final at-bat.

Wade Wyatt led the inning off with a hit by pitch. After a Marvin Harrell strikeout, Tanner Woods singled to left field. Connor Arcobasso singled up the middle to load the bases with one out. Will Gurganus drove in Wyatt and Woods on a double. Arcobasso scored on a wild pitch to cut the ESU lead to 7-4. ESU's pitching held strong to halt the Hawks comeback at 7-4.

For Chowan, Edge (1-1) pitched 5.2 innings. He scattered six hits and gave up five runs. Jacob Moore came in to pitch the final 1.1 innings. He gave up two runs on three hits. Offensively Chowan tallied eight team hits led by Arcobasso who went 2-4 at the plate.

For ESU, Eckman (1-0) pitched 6.0 innings. He gave up a run on five hits. Brandon Holup pitched the final inning, giving up three hits and three runs.  Saverio and Steve Zimmerman each collected two hits in the first game.

ESU opened the second game of the doubleheader with a two-run first inning. After picking up a third run in the second inning, CU's Wade Wyatt got the Hawks on the board with a two run shot over the left field fence. Wyatt's homerun cut the Warrior lead to 3-2 in the 2nd inning.

The Warriors added five runs to their lead before the Hawks responded with three runs in the bottom of the 5th and 6th innings. Josh Martin capped off the Hawks' scoring in the 5th inning with a two-run homerun to left center field.

The second game was called due to light in the bottom of the seventh inning with ESU coming away with the 10-5 win. Matt Kaplan (0-2) picked up the loss on the mound for Chowan after throwing 3.0 innings. He gave up five runs on four hits. Offensively the Hawks tailed eight team hits led by Will Gurganus who was 2-4 at the plate with an RBI.

For ESU, Ben Stine (1-0) picked up the win after putting in four innings of work. He gave up two runs on five hits. Jay Young was 3-5 with three runs scored while Christian Rishel drove in three runs.

The Hawks, now 1-7, will play host to Lock Haven University on February 27th and February 28th at Hawkins Field. First pitch is slated for 12:00pm on Saturday and 1:00pm on Sunday.
