CU Baseball Drops Home Season Opener to East Stroudsburg

Connor Arcobasso went 3-5 at the plate with one RBI in game two.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO, NC – The Chowan University baseball team dropped their home season opener on Saturday to East Stroudsburg University, dropping them to 1-5 on the year. ESU used seventeen team hits to power past Chowan 13-7 in game one and 15 hits to win game two 18-7.

East Stroudsburg jumped out to an early lead, opening the game with a Robert Bennie solo homerun. The Warriors went on to score another four runs in their opening at-bat to take a 5-0 first inning lead. ESU's Matt Festa retired the side in the Hawks first at-bat and went on to pitch four more shutout innings.

ESU's bats remained hot, adding two runs in the second and third innings. They added two more in the top of the 5th inning. Chowan got on the board in the sixth inning after scoring three runs off three hits. Josh Martin had an RBI single in the 5th. The Hawks scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning capped off by an Aaron Flanagan two RBI double. The comeback stopped short and the Hawks eventually fell in the first game 13-7.

Festa picked up the win on the mound. He threw five shutout innings, scattering three hits and striking out seven. Bobby Mason was credited with the loss after pitching two outs in the first inning. Will Edwards and Emory Chopp each pitched in relief of Mason. Eure ended game one with three hits and an RBI and Flanagan had two hits, two RBI, and two runs.  For ESU, Matt Walewski tallied four hits with three RBI and five runs.

ESU's bats stayed hot to start game two. The Warriors put up fifteen runs in their first two at-bats off. Walewski drove in five runs in game two after capping off a seven-run second inning with a grand slam.

CU's Cody Smith (0-2) picked up the loss on the mound after throwing two outs in the first inning. Five Hawks' pitchers came on in relief of Smith. Troy Bettinger and Jack Downum each pitched one scoreless inning in relief.

Connor Arcobasso went 3-5 with an RBI in game two while Tanner Woods drove in two runs off of two hits. Zach Cooper went 1-2 at the plate with a pair of RBI's.
The Hawks (1-5) will host the Warriors in a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 12:00pm at Hawkins Field.
