MURFREESBORO, NC - The Chowan University men's tennis team defeated Virginia State University 9-0 in CIAA play on Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks improve to 10-10 overall on the season and 7-0 in the CIAA with the victory. The Trojans slip to 3-5 overall and 3-4 in the conference with the setback.
Chowan rolled through Virginia State in both doubles and singles play. In doubles competition,
Farid Hajizada and
Rafael Goncalves defeated Nicholas Pfab and Elia Dreier 8-1 in the number one spot while
Tristan Martin and
Danilo Galovic handed Nicholas Brown and K'wmane Tonkins an 8-6 setback in the number two position. In number three doubles,
Ivan Doubograev and
Sasha Kirsanov picked up an 8-4 win over Delwin McCurdy and Evan Dirksen.
In singles play, Goncalves defeated Pfab 7-5, 6-1 in the number one position. Hajizada and Doubograev both topped their opponents in the second and third positions with scores of 6-4, 6-4 and 6-2, 6-0, respectively. In the fourth spot,
Enrique Barge clinched the match win for the Hawks with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Tonkins while in the fifth spot, Martin picked up a victory over McCurdy (6-1, 6-2).
Carlos Ramirez earned the final win for the Hawks with a 6-1, 6-2 win in the number six position.
The Hawks return to action on April 9
th when they host Virginia Union University. First serve is slated for 1:00pm.
