Box Score 2 KING, NC- The Chowan University baseball team picked up two wins on Saturday afternoon against Bluefield State. The Hawks topped the Big Blues 1-0 in the opening contest and came out on top of a 12-10 slugfest in the nightcap. Chowan improves to 20-18 on the year with the wins, having won their last six straight games while Bluefield State drops to 8-26 on the season with the setbacks.
In the first game, after five scoreless innings of play,
Cullen Cicotte stepped in as a pinch-hitter in the sixth and gave the Hawks all they would need to earn the victory. With
Aaron Flanagan on third base, Cicotte's sacrifice fly gave Chowan the go-ahead and the Hawks' bullpen shut down the Big Blues to secure the win.
Evan Hart threw six innings to earn the victory on the mound, surrendering just one hit while striking out four batters.
Tyler Burden entered the contest in the seventh and retired the Big Blues in order to earn the save. Flanagan and
Kyle Cross both notched doubles in the victory.
Bluefield State and Chowan both saw their offense come alive in game two.
The Hawks grabbed an early lead in the top of the first as
Will Gurganus scored on an infield error and Flanagan's double allowed
Blake Eure to score. Bluefield State answered with one run in the bottom of the frame and used a three-run homerun in the third to pull away 4-2.
Chowan battled back in the top of the fourth thanks to
Stephen Hux's two-run double,
Josh Martin's RBI single and a fielder's choice, resulting in a 6-4 advantage. The Hawks continued to build on the momentum in the top of the fifth with a six-run inning highlighted by Burden's grand slam over the center field wall. Trailing 12-6, Bluefield State plated four runs in their final at-bat but were not able to overcome the deficit.
Scott Edge threw 3.2 innings in the win and surrendered six earned runs on the mound.

Bobby Mason all entered the contest in-relief, with Mason earning the victory.
The Hawks and Big Blues aim to meet again this week in a doubleheader contest as April 19
th's games were called off due to inclement weather. Make-up details will be released as they become available. Chowan travels to Raleigh, North Carolina April 30
th-May 2
nd to compete in the CIAA Championship.
