Hawks Sweep Lions in CIAA Regular Season Finale

Tyler Burden hit three triples and knocked in three RBI for the Hawks on Sunday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University baseball team concluded CIAA regular season play on Sunday afternoon with a sweep of The Lincoln University.  The Hawks defeated the Lions 8-1in the opening game and picked up an 11-4 win in game two.  Chowan improves to 18-18 on the season with the victories and advances to 9-7 in league play.  The Lincoln University slips to 2-24 overall and 0-8 against CIAA competition. 

In the opening contest, the Hawks scored in the bottom of the first using Blake Eure's sacrifice fly.  Marvin Harrell Jr. led off the bottom of the third with a triple down the left field line and eventually scored on Will Gurganus' sacrifice fly to push the Hawks ahead 2-0.  The Lions answered back in the top of the fourth with Stephen Smith's RBI double.  Josh Martin's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth gave the Hawks an additional run and left The Lincoln University trailing 3-1. 

Chowan plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth using RBI singles by Kyle Cross and Eure along with an error by the Lions.  Holding a 6-1 advantage in the bottom of the sixth, Jacob Nestor's groundout allowed Martin to score and Burden roped a triple to center field to give the Hawks a commanding 8-1 lead.    

Bobby Mason held the Lions to one run (unearned) and three hits in six innings of work to earn the win on the mound.  Tre Harper entered the game in the seventh and kept The Lincoln University off the scoreboard in the final frame. 

Sam Garmoe took the loss for the Lions on the mound.  He threw 5.1 innings in the setback and surrendered eight runs (four earned) off of eight hits. 

Burden paced the Hawks with four hits at the plate while Eure knocked in two RBI. 

Devante Parker, Gabriel Santiago, Smith and Avery Lomax each had one hit for the Lions in the setback.  

The Lincoln University struck first in game two, taking advantage of a Hawk error in the top of the first for an early 1-0 lead. Chowan answered back in the bottom of the second, plating eight runs off of six hits and three errors to pull away 8-1. 

The Lions used Santiago's fielder's choice, Michael Howards' RBI single and Smith's sacrifice fly to score three runs in the top of the third.  Harell Jr. scored an additional run for the Hawks in the bottom of the frame to push Chowan ahead 9-4. Burden's triple in the fifth and a ground out by Martin in the sixth left the Lions trailing 11-4.  Burden held the Lions scoreless on the mound, striking out the side in the top of the seventh to secure the victory for the Hawks. 

Scott Edge threw 2.1 innings in the second game with Gurganus' tossing 3.2 innings to earn the win on the mound for the Chowan Blue and White. 

Burden, Aaron Flanagan, Jacob Nestor and Woods each had two hits for the Hawks in the second game.  Michael Howard notched two of the Lions' four hits in the setback.  Brendan Sherman-Johnson was charged with the loss on the mound for The Lincoln University. 

The Hawks conclude regular season play April 18th-19th when they travel to Bluefield State for a four game series.  Chowan will then travel to Raleigh, North Carolina April 30th through May 2nd to compete in the CIAA Championship.
