Hawks Split with Salem International in Series Finale

Kyle Cross had two hits and three RBI in the Hawks' first game against Salem International on Sunday.

MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University baseball team split a pair of games on Sunday against the visiting Tigers of Salem International University.  The Hawks toppled the Tigers 13-2 in the opening game but were shutout 3-0 in the nightcap.  Chowan moves to 8-7 on the season and Salem International posts a 2-11 record after Sunday's contests. 

The Hawks hit the ground running in the first game and used six runs in the bottom of the first to grab an early lead.  RBI singles by Stephen HuxTanner WoodsBlake Eure andMarvin Harrell Jr. along with a bases-loaded walk and sacrifice fly led to the early advantage. 

Salem International responded with two runs in the top of the fourth using RBI singles by Rahul Badve and Cody Whitmer. 

Woods RBI single followed Kyle Cross' two-run hit led to three additional runs by the Hawks in the bottom of the frame. 
 
 Burden's two-run double in the fifth, a sacrifice fly along with an error by the Tigers pushed Chowan ahead 13-2 and propelled the Hawks to victory. 

Austin McGhee threw five innings on the mound and earned the win in game one.  He held Salem International to five hits while striking out two batters.  Tre Harper tossed two shutout innings in-relief. 

Kevin Ortiz-Arroyo suffered the loss on the mound.  He surrendered nine runs (seven earned) in four innings of work while giving up nine hits. Aaron Alderman and Joe Preston both entered the game in-relief of Ortiz-Arroyo.

Burden, Cross, Will Gurganus and Woods all had two hits for the Hawks in the opening game.  Cross knocked in three RBI while Burden and Woods each tallied two RBI in the win. 

After a scoreless three innings of play in the nightcap, Salem International plated three runs in the top of the fourth inning.  RBI doubles by Nicco Lollio and Badve followed by Whitmer's RBI single gave the Tigers their first advantage of either contest and proved to be enough to earn the win. 

Aaron Flanagan, Gurganus and Woods were the lone Hawks to garner hits in the nightcap.

Carter Siweck took the loss on the mound for the Chowan Blue and White.  He tossed four innings in the setback and gave up three earned runs on three hits.  Bobby Mason and Gurganus both entered the game in-relief and held the Tigers scoreless.

Colton Lankford earned the win on the mound for the Tigers, surrendering three hits while striking out twelve batters.  He threw four perfect innings in the victory.

The Hawks return to action on March 10th when they travel to USC-Aiken for a single nine-inning contest.  First pitch is slated for 6:00pm. Chowan will also take on the Trojans on March 11th in a single nine-inning game starting at 4:00pm.
