Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO - The Chowan University baseball team split a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon with Salem International to move to 7-6 on the year. Salem International came from behind to beat Chowan 5-3 in the first game but the Hawks stormed back to take the nightcap with a 25-9 final score. Chowan pounded out 25 hits over two games, including a 18 hit performance in game two. The Tigers fall to 1-10 on the season after the split.
Chowan's
Evan Hart got the start on the mound to open the first game of the day. After a two-run first inning, Hart settled down on the mound and retired the side over the next four consecutive innings. Trailing 3-2, the Tigers tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the 6th. CU's
Tyler Burden came in to pitch the final inning where he gave up two runs for the loss.
The Hawks got on the board in the first game when
Aaron Flanagan drilled his fourth homerun of the season to centerfield, cutting into the Tiger lead at 2-1 in the 2nd inning. After Hart retired the side in the 3rd and 4th innings,
Blake Eure drove in the tying run with a single to center field in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Hart went three up, three down in the 5th inning on the mound and the Hawks gained a 3-2 lead on a Marvin Harrell single to left field. Harrell's hit scored
Josh Martin, who reached on a double to start the inning. Hart gave up a run in the top of the 6th to tie the game at 3-3. With Burden on in relief, the Hawks couldn't muster the hits to make a run in their final at-bat and eventually fell 5-3.
The night cap was a different story. After being held to seven hits in the first game, Chowan pounded out 18 hits in the nightcap win. Burden rebounded at the plate with five hits in five plate appearances. He tallied two homeruns, five runs batted in, and five runs scored in the win. Flanagan stayed hot at the plate in game two, finishing up 4-5 with five runs batted in.
Spenser McGhee ended the day 3-5 with five RBI and two doubles and
Kyle Cross was 2-4 with a homerun and two runs batted in.
Cody Smith picked up his first win of the season on the mound after tossing 2.1 innings. He gave up six runs, three of which were earned, and struck out five batters.
Bailey Lipscomb pitched 2.2 innings in relief. He gave up a hit and a run in 11 batters faced.
Will Edwards threw the final two innings. He struck out three batters and gave up two runs.
The Hawks, now 7-6, will host Salem International on Sunday, March 8th in a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 12:00pm at Hawkins Field.
