Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University baseball team used a late rally to defeat Barton College 9-8 on Tuesday afternoon in nonconference action. The Hawks even their record to 13-13 overall while the Bulldogs slip to 13-15 on the season.
A two-run homerun by
Tanner Woods in the bottom of the first gave Chowan an early lead.
Josh Martin's RBI double, a Bulldog error,
Tyler Burden's RBI double and
Blake Eure's RBI single led to four runs for the Hawks in the bottom of the second inning. Barton responded with two runs in the top of the third before Chowan extended the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth using Eure's sacrifice fly.
The Bulldogs' offense came alive late in the game as Barton plated three runs in the sixth and three runs in the seventh. In the sixth, a wild pitch, an error by the Hawks and Andrew Webster's RBI single led to three runs for Barton. The Bulldogs plated three more runs in the seventh with Tyler Garrett's RBI double, Avery Harper's sacrifice fly and an error by Chowan.
The Hawks battled back in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win. Eure's single up the middle and Woods' sacrifice fly gave Chowan all they would need for the 9-8 victory.
Will Gurganus kept the Bulldogs off the scoreboard in the top of the ninth to aid the effort.
Bailey Lipscomb threw five innings in the contest, surrendering two runs (one earned) and scattering six hits.
Ian Benner and
Tre Harper both entered the contest in-relief of Lipscomb. Benner and Harper gave up three runs apiece. Gurganus tossed the final two innings on the mound and earned the victory for the Chowan Blue and White. He held the Bulldogs scoreless while giving up just one hit.
Mike Brienza took the loss on the mound for Barton. He was one of five pitchers used by the Bulldogs in the setback.
Burden paced the Hawks at the plate with three hits and one RBI. Eure, Martin and Woods each tallied two hits win the win with Eure and Woods both knocking in three RBI. Calvin Hawke had three hits for Barton while Andrew Webster and Nick McKinney each added two hits in the setback.
The Hawks return to action and CIAA play this weekend when they travel to Optimist Park for a four-game series against Saint Augustine's University. First pitch is slated for 1:00pm on Saturday and Sunday.
