Box Score 2 PETERSBURG, VA- The Chowan University baseball concluded the CIAA series against Virginia State University with a sweep of the Trojans on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks edged the Trojans 7-6 in the first game and toppled Virginia State 10-3 in the series finale. Chowan moves to 12-13 on the season and evens their record in league play to 4-4 after Sunday's contests.
The Trojans struck first in the opening game, plating two runs off of RBI singles by Nicholas Christopher and David Markins.
Aaron Flanagan's homerun in the top of the second cut Chowan's deficit in half before
Tyler Burden's RBI single and
Tanner Woods' sacrifice fly pushed the Hawks ahead 3-2.
Virginia State answered with a two-run homerun by Griffin before Chowan regained the lead after a three-hit, three-run top of the fifth. The Trojans battled back in their half of the frame, scoring one run off a wild pitch and one using a sacrifice fly to knot the score 6-6.
Despite late offense by the Trojans, the Hawks had the final say in the opening game. Burden's solo homerun in the top of the sixth proved to be all Chowan would need to secure the 7-6 victory.
The Hawks pounded out 14 hits in the first game.
Kyle Cross and Burden each had three hits for the Chowan Blue and White while Flanagan,
Will Gurganus and
Spenser McGhee each tallied two hits for Chowan.
Bobby Mason earned the win on the mound for the Hawks. He tossed 2.2 innings in-relief of
Carter Siweck in the victory. Siweck scattered six hits over the course of 4.1 innings and surrendered five earned runs.
Zachary Jordan took the loss on the mound for Virginia State. He also had two of the Trojans' eight hits in the game. Markins tallied two hits for Virginia State in the first game.
In game two, Cross got things rolling for the Hawks after hitting a solo homerun in the top of the second. Christopher's RBI single in the bottom of the third knotted the score 1-1 early in the game. The Hawks exploded for six runs in the fifth after an RBI double by
Blake Eure, a wild pitch, error by Virginia State, a two-run double by Woods and Flanagan's two-run single.
Colton Gunn's RBI double in the bottom of the frame put the Trojans back in the game but Woods' three-run homerun in the top of the seventh put the game out of reach. Trailing 10-2, Virginia State plated an additional run in the bottom of the seventh but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.
Woods knocked in five RBI Sunday's second game. Christopher paced the Trojans offensively with three hits in the final contest of the afternoon.
Cody Smith tossed four innings while earning the win on the mound for the Hawks in game two. He gave up one earned run and three hits while striking out seven batters. Gurganus threw three innings in-relief while holding the Trojans to two hits and two runs. Christopher took the loss on the mound for Virginia State.
The Hawks return to action on March 24
th when they host Barton College. First pitch is slated for 1:00pm on Hawkins Field.
