Box Score 2 ETTRICK, VA – The Chowan University baseball team fell to 10-13 on the season and 2-4 in CIAA play after splitting a CIAA doubleheader against Virginia State University on Saturday afternoon. Chowan used extra innings for a 6-3 first game win but dropped the nightcap game 5-3.
The Hawks won the first game of the doubleheader in extra innings 6-3. Chowan scored five runs in the top of the 8
th inning and held the Trojans at bay in the bottom of the 8
th to get the extra innings victory.
Evan Hart posted another solid start for the Hawks on the mound. He tossed a four-hit game through seven innings of work where he gave up just one earned run. He also struck out eight Trojan batters to earn the win.
Tyler Burden picked up the save after coming into throw the final inning of the game. Burden gave up three hits and two runs but held on to get the final three outs for the win.
Will Gurganus ended the game with two hits and two runs batted in while Burden was 3-3 at the plate with a run batted in.
Stephen Hux joined Gurganus with multiple hits after going 2-4 at the plate.
Kyle Cross drove in two runs in the win.
The Trojans battled from behind to take the nightcap win 5-3. They scored two runs in the bottom of the 6
th inning which was enough to ice the win. The Hawks were held to six hits in the second game.
Austin McGhee started for the Hawks on the mound. He tossed 4.2 innings and gave up eight hits and three runs. CU's
Tre Harper came in to pitch the final 1.1 innings but gave up the lead in the bottom of the 6
th inning to pick up the loss.
Blake Eure ended the game 2-3 with a double while teammates
Tanner Woods and
Aaron Flanagan each went 1-2. Woods drove in two runs with a double.
Virginia State improves to 14-6 overall and 1-1 in CIAA play.
The two teams will continue the four-game series on Sunday, March 22
nd at Virginia State University. First pitch is slated for 12:00pm.
