Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University baseball team dropped a pair of games to Winston-Salem State on Monday afternoon in CIAA play. The Hawks fell to the Rams 11-2 in the first game and dropped a 6-5 decision in game two. Chowan slips to 9-12 on the season and 1-3 in CIAA play while Winston-Salem State advances to 18-6 on the year and 3-1 in the league after Monday's games.
In game one, Winston-Salem State plated two runs in the top of the second using Rashad Webster's two-run double. The Hawks answered back in the bottom half of the frame using an RBI single by
Kyle Cross. Alex Grubb's RBI double in the top of the third pushed the Rams ahead 3-1 before Connor Andrus' two-run single gave Winston-Salem State a 5-1 advantage in the fifth.
Aaron Hatch's solo homerun to left field gave the Rams a 6-1 lead in the top of the sixth.
Aaron Flanagan led off the top of the frame with a solo homerun to give the Hawks some offensive spark but it was not enough to overcome the deficit. Des Roberts hit a solo homerun in the top of the seventh and Webster hit a grand slam to center field to give the Rams a commanding 11-2 lead to secure the win for Winston-Salem State in game one.
Jordan Carlton earned the win on the mound for the Rams. He threw all seven innings, surrendering two earned runs off of seven hits while striking out seven Hawk batters.
Stephen Hux took the loss on the mound for Chowan. He threw four innings in the loss and gave up three earned runs off of five hits.
Bailey Lipscomb and
Will Edwards both entered the game in-relief of Hux.
Andrus had three hits for the Rams in the win along with two RBI. Webster tallied two hits and six RBI while Hatch also had two hits for Winston-Salem State.
Will Gurganus had two hits for the Hawks in the loss. Burden, Cross,
Devin Daniels,
Blake Eure and Flanagan each tallied one hit apiece for Chowan.
Winston-Salem State got their offense rolling in the top of the first inning using Nathan Steger's RBI double. Burden provided the answer for the Hawks with a solo homerun in the bottom of the frame to knot the score 1-1. The Rams plated an additional run in the top of the second with an RBI single by Andrus to take a 2-1 lead before Flanagan's sacrifice fly for the Hawks in the third tied the score once more.
Burden was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth to give the Hawks a narrow 3-2 advantage. Eure's RBI single followed by Woods' sacrifice fly pushed Chowan ahead 5-2 after five innings complete.
A two-run double by Colby Keene in the top of the fifth put the Rams back within striking distance. In the top of the sixth, three hits and an error by the Hawks led to two runs for Winston-Salem State, leaving Chowan trailing 6-5. The Hawks were unable to respond in their final two at-bats of the contest and suffered the setback.
Bobby Mason suffered the loss on the mound for the Hawks. He entered the contest in-relief of
Cody Smith, who threw 4.2 innings for Chowan. Mason tossed one inning in-relief while Burden also threw one inning for the Chowan Blue and White.
Eric Corlett picked up the win on the mound for Winston-Salem State. He threw 3.2 innings in-relief of Devin McLemore.
Eure had four hits for the Hawks in the second game along with one RBI. Burden, Cross and
Josh Martin each tallied hits for Chowan in game two.
Roberts and Keene each had two hits in the win for Winston-Salem State.
Chowan returns to action on March 21
st and 22
nd when the Hawks travel to Virginia State University for a four game CIAA series against the Trojans. First pitch is slated for 1:00pm on both days.
