Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University baseball team split a pair of CIAA games on Sunday afternoon against Winston-Salem State University. The Hawks move to 9-10 overall on the season and 1-1 in CIAA play while the Rams post a 16-5 overall record and 1-1 mark in the league.
The Hawks struck first in the opening contest when
Tanner Woods' double allowed
Tyler Burden to score. Winston-Salem State answered back in the top of the second using Alex Grubb's sacrifice fly to knot the score. A two-run homerun by
Josh Martin pushed the Hawks ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the second. Connor Andrus' single through the left side put Winston-Salem State back within striking distance in the Rams' next at-bat.
Down but not out, the Rams plated the tying run in the top of the seventh when Dylan Dombrowskas' RBI single to right field allowed Gavin Culler to score with Burden on the mound in-relief of
Evan Hart.
With the score tied 3-3 and one out in the bottom of the seventh, Burden's two-run blast to right field handed the Rams the 5-3 setback in the opening contest.
Evan Hart threw 6.1 innings for the Hawks. He scattered nine hits and three runs in the no-decision outing. Burden earned the win on the mound for the Hawks.
Sam Burton also tossed 6.1 innings in a no-decision for the Rams. He surrendered three runs (two earned) and scattered six hits. Eric Corlett took the loss for Winston-Salem State after entering the contest before Burden's walk-off homerun.
Burden and Martin each had two RBI for the Hawks while Woods had one RBI off of one hit in the first game. Dombrowskas and Nathan Steger each had two hits in the loss for Winston-Salem State.
In game two, Winston-Salem State got on the board in the first inning of play when Culler scored on a wild pitch. In the top of the second, the Rams plated three runs off of one hit and two Hawk errors to pull away 4-0. The Hawks answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame, one with Cross' sacrifice fly and one on Martin's RBI double. Colby Keene's solo homerun to left field in the top of the third gave Winston-Salem State a 5-2 advantage.
Burden's double to center field in the bottom of the fourth allowed
Marvin Harrell Jr. to score and made the score 5-3 but Des Roberts' three-run homerun for Winston-Salem State in the top of the fifth pushed the Rams ahead 8-3.
Andrus laced a two-run double in the top of the seventh to leave the Hawks trailing 10-3.
Stephen Hux's RBI single and a wild pitch by the Rams allowed Chowan to score two runs in the bottom of the frame, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.
Austin McGhee took the loss for the Hawks on the mound in game two. He tossed two innings in the 10-5 loss, surrendering four runs (one earned) on two hits.

Emory Chopp all entered the contest in-relief.
Aaron Hatch picked up the win for Winston-Salem State. He threw four innings in the contest and gave up three runs (all earned) off of five hits. Jordan Cummings threw three innings in-relief and earned the save for the Rams.
Burden, Martin and Woods each had two hits in the loss. Andrus led the effort for the Rams with three hits and three RBI while Keene and Grubb each had two-hits. Roberts knocked in three RBI in the victory for Winston-Salem State.
The Hawks and the Rams will meet again on Monday in the final games of the four-game series. First pitch is slated for 12:00pm.
