SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV - The Chowan University men's tennis team improved their overall record to 1-2 on the year after downing Shepherd University in a near sweep on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks came away with an 8-1 win, complete with a singles sweep.
The Hawks took two out of three doubles matches, dropping only the #1 seeded match. Rafael Gonclaves and
Enrique Barge picked up an 8-6 win at the #2 doubles match over Shepherd's Grant Davis and Louis Charette.
Tristan Martin and Saha Kirsanov paired up to win the #3 doubles 8-1 over Shepherd's Connor Howard and Austin Thomas. At the #1 seeded doubles match CU's
Farid Hajizada and Ivan Doubagraev battled in a tightly fought contest but fell in a tie break 9-8 (5).
The Hawks swept singles play easily over the Rams to take the 8-1 win. Hajizada bounced back to take the #1 singles match 6-2, 6-2 over Davis while Gonglaves won the #2 seeded match 6-3, 6-2 over Shepherd's Steven Kolumban. Hajizada ran his overall singles record to 7-0. Gonclaves improved his singles record to 2-3 after the win.
Martin picked up the #3 singles match win after beating Steven Lesko 6-3, 6-0. Martin evened his season singles record at 1-1 after Sunday's match. Barge handed Shepherd's Austin Thomas a 6-3, 6-2 loss for his first win of the season at the #4 singles match. Doubagraev beat Charette 6-1, 6-1 to pick up his first season singles win. CU's Ramirez beat Howard at the #6 singles spot 6-0, 6-0 to move to 1-2 on the year.
The Hawks will travel to Virginia Wesleyan College in their next outing scheduled for February 20th.
