Hawks Handle Bulldogs

Kyle Cross had three hits and three RBIs for the Hawks on Tuesday.
Box Score  MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University baseball team topped Barton College 6-3 on Tuesday afternoon in nonconference play.  The Hawks' victory over the Bulldogs was the first in program history.

The Hawks improve to 2-1 on the season while the Bulldogs start the 2015 campaign with a 0-1 record.

Kyle Cross paced the Hawks with three hits and three RBI's at the plate while Tyler Burden added two hits in the Win.  Mitchell Wheeler led the effort offensively for Barton with two base hits.

Barton stuck first in the top of the first when Andrew Webster's sacrifice fly put the Bulldogs on the board.  Chowan left two runners stranded in the home half of the frame but answered back in the bottom of the second inning when Aaron Flanagan's home run to deep right field knotted the contest 1-1.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Tyler Burden led off the inning with a triple to left center.  Stephen Hux's single to left field allowed Burden to score and gave the Hawk a 2-1 edge.  A double to left center by Kyle Cross extended Chowan's lead to 3-1.  The Hawks scored an additional run before the end of the frame to take a 4-1 advantage heading into the top of the seventh.

Chowan struck again in the bottom of the seventh using Cross' two-run single to pull away 6-1.  The Bulldogs scored once run in the eighth and one in the ninth but were unable to overcome the deficit and suffered the 6-3 setback.

Austin McGhee pitched five innings in the contest and held the Bulldogs to two hits while striking out six batters.  Bobby Mason earned the win on the mound for the Hawks while Brandon Warren took the loss on the mound for Barton.

Chowan returns to action on February 7th when the Hawks host West Liberty.  First pitch is slated for 12:00pm at Hawkins Field.  Saturday's doubleheader contest marks the start of a four-game series against the Hilltoppers.
