NEWPORT NEWS, VA- The Chowan University men's tennis team fell 8-1 to Virginia Wesleyan in a marathon match on Friday evening. The Hawks move to 1-3 on the season with the setback while the Marlins start the season 1-0.
Ivan Doubograev and
Farid Hajizada fell 9-7 to their opponents in the number one doubles position while
Tristan Martin and
Sasha Kirsanov also dropped a 9-7 decision in doubles play in the number three spot.
Enrique Barge and
Rafael Goncalves were defeated 8-3, playing in the number two doubles position.
Martin was the lone Hawk to earn a victory on Friday. He edged Spenser Bullock 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the third position and improved to 2-1 in singles play with the win. Graham Wilson defeated Hajizada 6-3, 6-3 in the number one singles position while Goncalves suffered a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 setback to Kenneth Downing in the second position.
Drew Tomajczyk outlasted Barge 6-3, 6-3 in the fourth position while Doubograev came up short in a 6-4, 7-5 decision against Adam Rosenldogen in the fifth spot. Brandon Kelleher clipped Kirsanov 6-1, 6-1 in the sixth position to secure the 8-1 win for Virginia Wesleyan.
The Hawks return to action on February 26
th when they host North Carolina A&T. First serve is slated for 3:00pm.
