Hawks Split Twinbill against Barton

Box Score WILSON, NC- The Chowan University baseball team split a pair of games against Barton College on Wednesday afternoon.  The Hawks move to 4-5 on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 5-2 on the year.  Chowan dropped the first game 14-4 but recovered to earn a 5-4 win in the nightcap. 

The Hawks jumped to a quick 2-0 lead in game one after RBI singles by Stephen Hux and Aaron Flanagan.  The advantage was short lived as the Bulldogs plated six runs off of six hits and one error in the bottom of the first.  Barton used another big inning in the second to solidify the advantage.  The Bulldogs scored seven runs off seven hits and two errors to pull away 13-2 in by the end of the second inning. 

Baron added an additional run in the bottom of the third with Calvin Hawke's RBI single.  The Hawks mustered two runs in the top of the fifth with Blake Eure's RBI double and an RBI groundout by Flanagan before suffering the 14-4 setback. 

Bobby Mason took the loss on the mound for the Hawks.  He threw one inning in the contest and surrendered six runs off six hits.  Will Edwards and Emory Chopp both entered the game in-relief.  Eure was lone Hawk to notch more than one hit in the contest.

Kerry Walker picked up the win for Barton on the mound. Ben Youngblood had three hits and five RBI for the Bulldogs including a three run homerun while Hawke, Avery Harper, Nick McKinney and JT Bunce all had multiple hits in the victory.

Two errors by the Bulldogs led to three runs for the Hawks in the first inning of the second game.  Trailing 3-0, Barton responded in their half of the frame with a two-run homerun by Matthew Berry.  A wild pitch by Chowan allowed McKinney to score for Barton in the bottom of the forth, knotting the score 3-3. 

The Bulldogs used a Chowan error in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. The Hawks scored two runs in the top of the sixth after a Barton error and RBI single by Gurganus  to secure the 5-4 victory.  The game as called in the sixth inning due to darkness.

Flanagan and Will Gurganus combined for all five of the Hawks' hits in the second game.  Evan Hart earned the win on the mound for Chowan while Trent Fennell took the loss for Barton. Cody Smith and Tyler Burden both made appearances on the mound for the Blue and White.

Chowan returns to action on Saturday and Sunday as the Hawks host Post University in a three-game series.
