Box Score PETERSBURG, VA- The Chowan University volleyball team dropped a 3-2 decision on the road against Virginia State University on Monday in CIAA Northern Division play. The Hawks move to 16-7 overall, 13-2 in league play and 8-1 against divisional opponents. The Trojans post a 17-8 overall record, 11-3 mark against CIAA opponents and hold an 8-1 mark in the CIAA Northern Division after Monday's contest.
The Hawks fell to the Trojans 25-17 in set one but recovered to edge Virginia State 25-23 in the second set. Chowan dropped set three 26-24 and defeated the Trojans 25-19 in set four before suffering a 15-13 setback in the fifth and final set.
Ashley Tutherow led the effort for Chowan with 18 kills for the Hawks.
Suraya Chase and
Brittany Tschida each tallied 10 kills in the setback while
Cindy Ehrich and
Alyssa Born notched 27 and 25 digs, respectively. Chase followed with 20 digs.
Becca Page handed out 28 assists while
Lindsey Denne added 19 assists and 14 digs.
Tiara Ramey led all players in the contest with 20 kills followed by Sydney Uko who tallied 13 kills. Dierdre Carter and Brookie Dargan added 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Adriana Hazou hauled in 30 digs followed by Ramey with 24 digs. Diamond Simpson tallied 28 assists for the Trojans.
Chowan trailed Virginia State 19-8 in set one before rallying to score nine consecutive points, cutting the deficit to two points (19-17). The Trojans responded with a 6-0 run to secure the 25-17 victory in the opening set.
Virginia State clung to a narrow 16-15 lead midway through the second set before a kill by Tschida and two Trojan errors pushed the Hawks ahead 18-16. Chowan held onto the advantage for the remainder of the set and used a kill by Tutherow to confirm the 25-23 win in set two.
The Hawks and Trojans battled early in the third set before the Virginia State pulled ahead 20-11. Down but not out, Chowan battled back to score eight straight points to make the score 20-19. With the score tied 22-22, the Hawks used Tutherow's kill and Chase's service ace to earn a 24-22 advantage. The Trojans refused to back down and scored four straight points to grab a 26-24 win the third set.
Chowan jumped to a quick 6-2 lead at the start of the fourth set. With the score tied 18-18, the Hawks outscored the Trojans 7-1 in the final stretch and used a Virginia State error to win set four 25-19, forcing a fifth deciding set.
The Hawks and Trojans each fought to gain momentum in the fifth set. Chowan held a 13-12 advantage, but were unable to maintain the lead as the Trojans used two kills and a Hawk error to confirm the 15-13 set win.
Chowan looks to recover on November 13
th when the Hawks take on Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia. The CIAA Northern Division contest is the final match of the regular season for Chowan. First serve is slated for 6:00pm.
