Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University volleyball team won their ninth straight match on Thursday evening with a 3-0 victory over Virginia State University. The Hawks improve to 10-3 on the season with the victory and remain perfect in CIAA play with a 7-0 mark. The Lady Trojans slip to 8-6 overall on the season and move to 4-2 against CIAA opponents.
Chowan topped Virginia State 25-22, 25-23, and 25-18 to earn the sweep.
Princes Chauni Green led the Hawks with a match-high 11 kills in the contest while
Ashley Tutherow followed with 10 kills.
Becca Page dished out 15 assists while
Lindsey Denne added 13 assists for the Chowan Blue and White. Denne also grabbed 11 digs while
Alyssa Born and
Suraya Chase added 10 digs apiece.
Cindy Ehrich notched nine digs in the victory and now stands as Chowan's career digs leader with 1,590. The previous career digs record (1,587) was set by Missy Newby (1995-1998).
Sydney Uko paced Virginia State with 23 kills in the contest. Diamond Simpson tallied 17 assists while Adirana Hazou notched 21 digs for the Lady Trojans.
Chowan and Virginia State battled early in the first set. With the score tied 9-9, Virginia State rattled off three straight points to pull away 12-9. The Hawks battled but were unable to catch the Lady Trojans until late in the set when Tutherow's kill finally restored the lead to Chowan, and left Virginia State trailing 20-19. The Hawks held on to the advantage for the remainder of the set and earned the 25-22 victory on a Virginia State service error.
Both teams fought to earn momentum and control for the majority of the second set as neither team was able to hang on to a lead of more than six points. With the score tied 23-23, a Lady Trojan attack error followed by a kill by Denne confirmed a 25-23 victory for the Hawks and gave Chowan a 2-0 advantage in the match.
Virginia State grabbed an early 8-3 lead in set three after taking advantage of Hawk errors and kills by Dierdre Carter and Brookie Dargan. The Lady Trojans trailed held on to the lead until midway through the set after the Hawks clawed their way back from the deficit and knotted the score 13-13 with Ehrich's service ace.
With the score tied 16-16, the Hawks rallied off four straight points to pull away 20-16. Chowan maintained the lead for the remainder of the contest and took advantage of four consecutive Lady Trojan errors to confirm the 25-18 victory.
The Hawks return to action on October 12
th when they host Elizabeth City State in a CIAA Northern Division match-up. The contest will also be the Hawks' annual Dig Pink match and will aim to raise awareness and funds for cancer and the Side-Out Foundation.
