Hawks Take a Pair from St. Augustine's

Tyler Burden collected seven hits and a save against St. Augustine's on Sunday.
Box Score CARY, NC- The Chowan University baseball team concluded their series against St. Augustine's on Sunday afternoon.  The Hawks took the first game 23-3 before edging the Falcons 8-7 in the nightcap.  Chowan stands in second place in the CIAA standings with a 16-21 overall record and 15-5 finish in league play.
 
Woods' sacrifice fly in the top of the first gave the Hawks an early lead in the first game against the Falcons.  Chowan tacked on two more runs in fourth using an error by St. Augustine's and Blake Eure's RBI single to right field.  The Falcons answered with two runs of their own in their half of the frame but the Hawks put the game out of the reach in the innings to follow.  In the fifth, Chowan used three errors and five hits to plate 12 runs before capitalizing on a six-run sixth inning to take a commanding 21-2 lead. 
 
The Falcons mustered one run in the bottom of the sixth but the Hawks responded with two more runs in the seventh to put the icing on the 23-3 victory.  Stephen Hux threw five innings en-route to earning the win on the mound.  He held St. Augustine's to seven hits and two earned runs. 
 
Tyler Burden paced the Hawks with six hits and three RBI while Tanner Woods, Michael Strobel, Ryan Moore and Eure each tallied two hits.  Josh Martin had four RBI for the Blue and White. 
 
The second game was closely contested.  Chowan struck first in the top of the second using a Falcon error but St. Augustine's recovered in the bottom of the third thanks to a bases-loaded walk, grand slam and RBI single to center.  Trailing 6-1 in the fourth, Chowan used Josh Catalano's two-run double and RBI singles by Eure and Matt Wisniewski to make the score 6-5.  Woods' two-run double in the sixth gave Chowan a narrow 7-6 advantage. 
 
The Falcons plated a run in their half of the frame to knot the score 7-7 using Jordan Wright's single.  Cross broke the tie in the top of the seventh with an RBI single to center field and Burden retired St. Augustine's in order to secure the 8-7 win. 
 
Catalano and Moore each had two hits in the second game.  Austin McGhee earned the win on the mound while Burden notched the save. 
 
Chowan returns to action on April 8th when they travel to Wilson, NC for a doubleheader against Barton.  First-pitch is slated for 1:00pm.
