Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, NC- The Chowan University baseball team came up short in a CIAA doubleheader against Winston-Salem State University. The Rams improve to 10-5 overall and 4-0 in the league with the wins while the Hawks move to 1-12 on the year and 0-4 against CIAA competition. Winston-Salem State topped the Hawks 9-6 in the first game and grabbed a 4-2 win in the nightcap.
The Hawks outhit the Rams 12-8 in the first game, but Winston-Salem State still walked away with the win. Trailing 4-0 in the top of the second,
Tyler Burden's RBI single put the Hawks on the board.
Wade Wyatt's RBI base knock made the score 4-2 in the top of the third.
The Rams tacked on one run in the home half of the third, three more in the fourth and one in the fifth to pull away 9-2. Chowan responded with three runs in the top of the sixth using an RBI double by
Evan Holton, an RBI single by
Tanner Woods and an RBI from Burden to inch the score to 9-5. Holton drew a bases loaded walk in the top of the seventh to score
Evan Seymour, but the Rams worked out of a bases loaded jam to take the 9-6 victory.
Colby Wiggins paced the Hawks with three hits while
John Hunter and Woods each tallied two hits in the loss.
Evan Hart took the loss on the mound for Chowan. He threw four innings and surrendered nine runs (all earned) while striking out three batters. Ray Crawford, Jacob Barber, and Rafael Gonzalez each garnered two hits for Winston-Salem State.
A solo homerun by
Ryan Moore in the top of the second put the Hawks ahead 1-0 early in the second game. An RBI single and two-run double by Winston-Salem State in the home half of the frame left the Hawks trailing 3-1. Chowan answered with a run in the third using an RBI hit from Seymour. The Rams tacked on a fourth run using a sacrifice fly in the third. Both teams failed to score in the remainder of the contest, allowing Winston-Salem State to secure the 4-2 win.
Wiggins and Burden both notched two hits in the loss.
Stephen Hux suffered the loss for Chowan. He threw five innings and gave up four earned runs.
The Hawks return to action on Wednesday when they travel to take on UNC-Pembroke in a doubleheader. First-pitch is slated for 1:30pm.
