Hawks Battle Past Trojans to Complete Four Game Sweep

John Hunter had two hits and two RBI in the Hawks' second game against the Trojans.
Box Score  MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University baseball team completed the sweep of Virginia State University on Sunday afternoon with 2-0 and 4-2 victories at Hawkins Field.  The Hawks improve to 5-18 overall and 4-4 in the league.  The Trojans slip to 13-8 overall and 7-5 against CIAA competition. 
 
The Hawks opened up the bottom of the second with a run when Blake Leebrick's ground out to short stop allowed Tanner Woods to score. Blake Eure's sacrifice fly to left field allowed Evan Holton to score in the bottom of the sixth to give Chowan a 2-0 advantage. 
 
Stephen Hux scattered seven hits en-route to earning the shut-out win for the Hawks.  Maso Cotton took the loss on the mound after surrendering two runs (one earned). 
 
Ryan Moore and Woods both collected two hits in the first game for the Hawks while Eure and Leebrick tallied one RBI apiece.  Percy Evans and Zach Jordan each had two hits for the Trojans. 
 
Virginia State got on the board early in the nightcap with runs in the first and second.  Chowan plated a run of their own in the bottom of the third using a sacrifice fly by Tyler BurdenJohn Hunter hit a two-run single in the fifth to give the Hawks a 3-2 lead.  Eure's sacrifice fly to right field allowed Evan Holton to score and put Chowan ahead 4-2 and propelled the team to victory.
 
Hunter and Josh Martin both finished the game with two hits.  Will Gurganus picked up the win on the mound.  He scattered six hits over the course of six innings and held the Trojans to two runs.  Austin McGhee earned the save for the Hawks, his second in as many days. 
 
Cole Tapp took the loss for the Trojans on the hill. 
 
The Hawks return to action on March 19th when they host Pace University in a nonconference doubleheader.  First pitch is slated for 1:00pm.
