Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University baseball team snapped an 18 game losing streak on Saturday afternoon with a pair of victories over Virginia State University. The Hawks topped the Trojans 2-1 in game one of the CIAA doubleheader match-up before handing the Virginia State a 13-2 loss in the nightcap. Chowan improves to 3-18 overall and 2-4 in league play with the victories while Virginia State moves to 13-6 on the year and 3-3 against CIAA competition.
Tyler Burden scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the first to put the Hawks ahead 1-0 early in the ball game. The Trojans used an RBI single by Zach Jordan to knot the score 1-1 in the top of the third.
Blake Eure was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom home half of the frame to give Chowan the go-ahead run. Chowan's runs proved to be timely as they secured the 2-1 victory despite being out-hit 10-4 by Virginia State.
Bobby Mason earned the win on the mound for Chowan, his first of the season. He scattered six hits over four innings of work while striking out two Trojan batters.
Carter Siweck entered the game in-relief of Mason and held Virginia State scoreless through two innings.
Austin McGhee pitched out of a seventh inning jam to earn the save for the Hawks.
Tyler Burden collected two of the Hawks' four hits in the first game while
Ryan Moore and
Josh Martin tallied base hit knocks as well.
Colton Gunn took the loss for Virginia State on the hill in game one. Nicholas Christopher, Jordan, Joshua Markins and Jamison Griffin each tallied two hits for the Trojans in the setback.
Chowan jumped to an early 4-0 lead in game two using two-run singles by Eure and
Colby Wiggins in the bottom of the second. The Trojans plated a run in the top of the third using an RBI single by Christopher to make the score 4-1.
A two-run base hit up the middle by
Tanner Woods, an RBI single by
Wade Wyatt and a run scored off a wild pitch gave the Hawks a comfortable 8-1 lead after three innings. Chowan exploded for five runs in the fifth inning using Moore's two-run triple, an RBI single by
John Hunter and a two-run homerun by
Tanner Woods.
Virginia State mustered one additional run in the top of the sixth before falling to the Hawks 13-2. Jordan suffered the loss on the mound after surrendering eight runs (six earned) in 2.1 innings of work.
Evan Hart went the distance for Chowan and held Virginia State to five hits over the course of seven innings. Woods paced the Hawks with three hits and four RBI's while Hunter tallied three hits for the Blue and White as well. Wiggins, Burden and
Wade Wyatt each notched two hits in the win.
The Hawks will take on the Trojans on Sunday in a doubleheader. First pitch has been moved to 11:00am due to pending inclement weather in the area.
