Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC – The Chowan University baseball team fell to 1-8 on the season after dropping a twinbill to the visiting Warriors of East Stroudsburg University.  The Warriors defeated the Hawks 9-7 in both games and move to 7-0 on the season.

The first game took extra innings to decide a winner.  East Stroudsburg used a five-run third inning and plated two additional runs in the fourth to pull ahead 7-0.  Chowan responded in the home half of the fifth, scoring seven runs off three hits and four Warrior errors.  A sacrifice fly and RBI single in the top of the ninth secured the 9-7 win for East Stroudsburg.

Ben Bortz earned the win on the mound for the Warriors while Tyler Burden suffered the loss.  Evan Hart, Josh Barmoy, and Will Gurganus all made appearances on the mound for the Hawks.  Ryan Moore, John Hunter and Josh Catalano each tallied two hits in the loss.

Each team plated two runs in their half of the first inning to start out the nightcap.  East Stroudsburg added six runs in the top of the second using three hits and two Hawk errors to pull ahead 6-2.  A sacrifice fly by Evan Holton and RBI double from Moore tacked on two runs for the Hawks in the bottom of the second, and a three-run third inning for Chowan put the Hawks within striking distance.  Chowan's comeback was not enough to overcome the deficit as the Warriors scored an additional run in the top of the sixth to secure the 9-7 victory in game two.

George Mazza took the loss on the mound for Chowan after giving up eight runs (three earned) on five hits.  Stephen Hux entered the game in-relief of Mazza.  He held the Warriors to one run off six hits.

Josh Martin went 3-3 at the plate with one RBI in the loss.  Moore tallied two hits and two RBI's to aid the effort.

The Hawks travel to Winston-Salem State this weekend to compete in their first CIAA match-up of the season. First pitch is slated for 12:00pm on Saturday and 1:00pm on Sunday.
