PETERSBURG, VA - The Chowan University men's tennis team picked up a solid 8-1 win over Virginia State University on Thursday afternoon. The Hawks were one match away from the clean sweep after taking all three doubles matches and winning five out of six singles matches.
Pedro Aiala fought to win a split set decision at 7-5 and 3-6 (14-12) at the number one seeded match for the Hawks. Aiala teamed up with Danillo Galovic for a number one doubles 9-7 win. CU's
Ivan Doubograev cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over VSU's Nicolas Pfab while
Sasha Kirsanov battled to a 7-6 (4), 6-2 win over Evan Dirkson in the number three singles match. Doubograev and Kirsanov teamed up to a take an 8-1 match win in the number two doubles match.
Galovic squeaked out a 7-6 first set win then rolled to a 6-2 second set win to take the number four singles match over VSU's K'wammane Tonkins.
Scott Van Eck dropped the fifth seeded singles match to VSU's Delwin McCurdy 6-3, 6-2 while Jaquese Williams beat VSU's Denzel Harris 6-4, 6-3 in the sixth seeded singles set.
Van Eck and Williams took an 8-4 win in the third seeded doubles match.
The Hawks improve to 7-14 on the year and 4-3 in the CIAA after Thursday's win.
They will travel to Virginia Union University on Monday, April 1st in their next outing.
