ESU Outlasts Hawks in Marathon Game

Box Score MURFREESBORO - The Chowan University Baseball team fell in extra-innings to East Stroudsburg University 6-3 on Monday afternoon.  Chowan falls to 4-12 on the season, while East Stroudsburg University improves to 2-2.  Game two started following the extra-inning affair but was suspended due to darkness in the top of the fourth inning.  Game two will resume at a later date.

East Stroudsburg started the game off scoring two runs in the top of the first inning.  Eric Boyer singled to right field scoring Drew Hercik for the Warriors' 1-0 lead.  Boyer scored off a Mike Tenaglia single extending the lead to 2-0.

Chowan answered the Warrior rally with a run of their own.  Josh Catalano started the home half of the inning with a walk.  Colby Wiggins pushed Catalano to second on a sacrifice bunt.  Evan Holton singled to right field and stole second base to put two runners in scoring position for Tyler BurdenBurden singled to right field plating Catalano and Holton for his sixth RBIs of the season.  Burden finished the day at the dish going 3-5 with a double.  Catalano drew three walks in the contest
The score would remain tied until the Warriors took the lead 3-2 in the top of the fifth.  Boyer reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on Brian Ernst's single up the middle.

Keenan Stare came in for the Warriors in the seventh for the save.  The Hawks had other ideas.  Michael Strobel drew a walk to open the inning.  Brandon Mack singled on a bunt.  Strobel was put into scoring position with an errant throw by Stare.  Catalano's fielder's choice cut down the tying run at home.  With two outs and a runner on third, Colby Wiggins singled to left field for his only hit of the ballgame scoring Catalano to tie the game at three apiece.

Ryan Moore ended the contest with a no-decision pitching eight innings giving up eight hits and striking out five.  Carter Siewick pitched four innings of relief and took the loss dropping him to 0-1 on the season.  Siewick gave up one hit, four walks and had three strikeouts.

It took 12 innings to decide a winner.  East Stroudsburg plated three more runs in the 12th off a base hit by Joe Bennie and two walks in the inning.  Mark Romano would push the go-ahead run in off a sacrifice fly to left field plating Bennie.  Chris Knott extended the Warrior lead to 6-3 pushing across Ernst and Hercik on a throwing error. 

Brian Ernst pitched a no-decision throwing six innings giving up four hits and striking out 10.  Stare picked up his first win of the season pitching the final six innings allowing four hits and striking out seven.

Chowan University goes on the road to face Barton on Wednesday, February 27.  The Hawks return to Hawkins Field on Saturday, March 2nd to start CIAA play against arch-rival Elizabeth City State University in a three game series.  First pitch is slated for 12:00pm.
