Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO - The Chowan University baseball team split a doubleheader with Saint Andrews College this afternoon to wrap up the 2012 regular season. Chowan dropped the first game 5-2 but powered back in the night cap to win 11-3.
Justin Bagbey ended his career at Hawkins Field by slamming two homeruns; his fourth homerun in two days.
Saint Andrews jumped out to an early lead over the Hawks after scoring four runs in their first two at-bats. The Hawks left 11 runners on base in the loss and committed three errors in the field.
Brett Garrett was looking for his 7th win of the season on the mound but picked up a loss instead. He threw a complete game and gave up five earned runs on six hits. He also struck out three batters in the game.
Ryan Moore stayed hot at the plate after he posted a 3-4 plate performance to lead the team offensively.
Bagbey helped the Hawks to a four-run first at-bat and a six-run third inning after blasting homeruns in each inning. He accounted for six RBI in the win.
Colby Wiggins, Michael Stroebel, and Moore each posted two hits in the second game win.
John DesChamps picked up the win for the Hawks on the mound. DesChamps pitched six innings for his 8th win of the season. He gave up four hits, three runs, and struck out four in the game.
Evan Hart closed the game out for Chowan and struck out two in one inning of work.
The Hawks ended the season 24-21 overall. They currently sit in second place in the CIAA (14-4) behind Winston-Salem State University (14-2). The top four teams in the league will advance to the Spring Championship next week at Virginia State University. Behind Chowan is Virginia State University and in fourth place as of Wednesday is Saint Augustine's University. Tournament play will begin Thursday, April 19th. Brackets will be released early next week for the tournament.
