Hawks Split CIAA Opener with WSSU

Box Score MOCKSVILLE, NC - The Chowan University baseball team fell in a 3-2 loss to Winston-Salem State University to open CIAA play but bounced back to take a 7-4 win in the second game of the series this afternoon. The Hawks move to 9-10 on the year and 1-1 in CIAA play. The Hawks scored two runs to open the game but were held off the board for the remaining eight at-bats. Chowan took the second game 7-4.  Winston-Salem State moves 11-11 and 1-1 in league play. 

Chowan opened the first game with two runs after Justin Bagbey drove in Josh Catalano and Evan Seymour for an early 2-0 lead.  But WSSU pitching shut the Hawks offensive attack down after their first at-bat. The Hawks were held to three hits in the game by the Rams Wes Edwards. He pitched a complete game for WSSU, striking out six and giving up two runs. Brett Garrett had a solid outing for the Hawks on the mound but couldn't get the run support he needed for the win. Garrett pitched six innings where he gave up 10 hits and struck out four Ram batters. 

The Hawks turned their luck around for the second game of the doubleheader after producing 11 team hits for a 7-4 win. John DesChamps had a great outing for the Hawks on the mound. He tossed six innings for the win, his third win of the season. He scattered seven hits and struck out two in the win. Evan Hart came in to close out the game in the 7th inning for his second save of the season. Both Brett Overton and Ryan Moore were 3-3 at the plate. Overton had three RBI and scored a run while Moore had a double. Brandon Mack posted two hits and two RBI with a double in the win. 

The Hawks will wrap up the three-game CIAA series with the Rams on Monday with a single, nine inning game. They will travel to USC-Aiken for a two game series on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. 

The Hawks will return home on March 13th-14th to host Millersville University in a three game series.
